I have fonts appearing differently on Macs vs PCs vs iPhone, etc. How do I make sure the font I choose shows up the same on every computer. (I'd rather not make it an image, if that makes sense)
Use a 'web safe' font. There are only a few.

Is there a way to still use other fonts that I've downloaded?
I looked into Google Fonts, and I see that I need to add html code to the page. Not sure exactly how to do this though since I am using VSD and not fluent in coding. Help?

OR if its just the heading fore instance, select object, tick add advanced text, then go to effects tool, select any one or more effects, play till it looks how you want it.
then you can also add alternative text by using the object tool
Have a look at the header in this site, hover over to see the alternative text

I would like to use a Google font called Raleway - http://www.google.com/fonts#UsePlace:use
Would anyone be able to walk me through step by step how to use this in my VSD site? I'm new to html and not sure how to embed it and use it in VSD.

Fonts will always be different on every computer, Mac or PC. That is because if that computer does not have that font in it's catalog the text will be forced to a default one. Most likely it's Arial or Courier. The only way I have found to make font show as intended is to use the shape tool, create a shape, and paste the text in that. Of course that makes it a picture and web bots don't read pictures, but if you add the same text in the Alternate Text box below in the Object Properties box, it can.
One problem with this technique is you will have to line up/shift the text to fit the size shape used as pasted text will come out in one long string of words. Good Luck

HI,
I've been trying to deal with the same issue. Using the Alternative text approach worked fine in the sense that the appearance seems to be OK on different devices and browsers however the resolution of the text (as an image with Alt text) is decreased relative to 'real' text. This is OK, but irritiating. (To overcome the issue of not being detected by web crawlers I was going to include a text box with text the same colour as the background and/or hide it behind an image - is this a standard trick?)
A couple of questions.
Is there a way to increase the resolution of the image formed from the text box?
I understand that the issue of different appearances with different platforms can be resolved by working at the HTML level however is this an advanced procedure in HTML. I am happy to try HTML but don't want to have to study for a month to get to the level that I can sort this out! I have read about using CSS and Reset style sheet however how do you use these.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Best regards
J

I see you found one of the draw backs to advanced text. If you want to use an html box then I would take a look at this site. Full of great examples of basic and advanced coding.

You can also take a look at the site in my signature on how to implement these in VSD.

...to include a text box with text the same colour as the background and/or hide it behind an image...
Another one of Google’s guidelines is: Avoid hidden text or hidden links. This means, don’t use white text on a white background. It means don’t include text behind images. Don’t use CSS to hide text. Don’t set the font size to 0. These are specific examples of what not to do straight from Google’s help center page on the topic. When you do these things, Google is deeming your site untrustworthy, and will go out of its way not to rank your site well or most likely de-index it completely.

If you have a solid color background, you can use the shape tool with button text (it doesn't have to be a link) to add non-standard fonts for headlines, etc. I wouldn't use it for large blocks of text. You can also add alt text, and the fonts appear crisper than the advanced text does.
