I just made a homepage the VSD and want to use it as a template for all my other sub-pages. How do I duplicate this page so I can use it as a template?

I believe they may be looking into ways to more easily clone pages. Currently, there's two things involved. You can go to Settings -> Standard Settings for New Pages and choose some basic items to clone, such as colors and page sizes. As for the objects on the page, you can simply click and drag a big box over all the content or pick & choose holding Shift + click and copy & paste the objects to the new page. The objects should paste in the exact location as the original as well, so you don't have to re-align everything.

Gotta love copy/paste. That's what I do. Make sure you have your background settings exactly the way you want it. As Adam suggested you can go to settings etc.. Now copy everything by highlighting your page (click and drag the mouse over the entire page). Then add a page and paste it. Next delete what you don't need and copy it again, so now you have the basic template copied. Then add all the pages you need and paste the "template" into them. Viola!

I do this all the time. It seems like many steps but you'll get use to it. Hopefully there will be a better solution but for now it's not too bad. Things could be worse!

Yes - cut-n-paste works great - however what I am finding is I now have many MANY IMG object that are basically the same - that is - if I created say 10 button objects on my home page to goto various pages, and copy these 10 buttons to the other 10 pages, I now have 100 objects (IMG_01 - IMG_100) that need to be uploaded every time I make a change. Same holds true for background images, lines etc. I am up to over 400 IMG objects now - takes forever to upload - LOL.

Anyone know a way around this issue??

Thanks!

My Opinion is this. The new version of VSD has the capability of copying a page when you select add page. but if you have used the "Additional Files>add files" to upload your images or whatever and then after the upload you didn't go back to "Additional Files>remove files" then it will upload them everytime you upload and also make it a slower upload time.
Your could also go to your files folder located in My Documents and remove the duplicates NOTE:( MUST HAVE VSD OPEN AND MINIMIZED FOR THIS) and after that maximize VSD and save, Hec I've even completely deleted everything in my website folder and then saved it afterwards and it cleaned it out good.
But thats me, but do save a back up if you try this.

Well I did what you suggessted. I went into my FILES dierctory and deleted all 402 IMG files. These are nothing more than an OBJECT that links to the different pages allowing people to travel throughout my site.

When I cut and Paste onto another page, apparently it creates ANOTHER object with a different name. I cannot get it to use the same object - thus after I deleted all 402 IMG files, and resaved my homepage in VSD - all 402 IMG files came back!

I would think that if a HOME button object links back to the sme page, why cant I use that same OBJECT on each page and not have to have duplicate OBJECTS doing the same thing with diffeent names!

I haven't tested the new cloning feature yet, but I'd assume it'd use the same method of saving images. I'm sure there's a reason for the way it works, but being such small file sizes, I haven't been overly concerned. Do you see any real performance hit on your site, or does it just bother you knowing there's unnecessary redundancy? ;) That was my debate, anyway.

No - no real performance hit that I can see. I am using RoadRunner - and they limit your space to 5mb - so I am just concerned about the redundancy - consuming disk space that I feel is unnecessary - thats all!

5MB? Holy cow. Well, that's understandable. I was thinking these days, the norm would be more in the hundreds. I laughed when my hosting service offered 300GB for $6/month, and now it's jumped to 1500GB. Insane.

Yeah - well I dont understand them at RR - I called and asked how much disk space they allot - and one guy said 10MB the other said 5MB (10 was for email-lol).

Anyway I just looked at my FILES directory for my web site, and withouth the HTML pages I have almost 30mb of stuff (genealogy reports, charts and pictures) and everything seems to be working fine. HA HA watch my next bill will prob have $500 extra for teh extra disk space I am using - go figure.

I also asked how and if I can see how much of the 5mb I was using - and they said no!

Along that line - are you familiar with any good web hosting sites? Seems I need to get away from RR!

Thanks for all you input!
