Is there an easy way to get rid of files, such as images and text boxes, from the folder on the hard drive?

It seems that VSD keeps stuff forever. I know that there is a Remove Files option but for that I have to know which files are no longer used and trash them one by one.

I tried saving the site under a different name thinking that VSD would only save the files it knew were active but it saved all of the old files that I long ago took off the site.

I think it does clean up unused files on the server. Hooray!

maybe check the server to see which ones it's got there? Just a thought, unless it uploaded all those files too lol then I dunno :P

Use an FTP client, such as CC FreeFTP or DFTP, and check what you have on the server. If you delete it all and then resync your site, you should have only the files/folders that you are using there.

The server is not the problem. My question referred to old files on my computer hard drive.

Unless you are saying do a visual comparison between the files on the server and those on my computer hard drive and then manually delete all of the unused files. There has got to be a better way.

Maybe in the next release?

HI Bass,
well this isthe way I do what your asking about, but FIRST backup your website somewhere safe.
If you have NOT moved any of the images or files used from the original location when you made your website, then this could work or you'll have to hunt down where they are.

First open VSD and then minimize it. Now go to "My Documents" (or where ever your website folder is)
and open that. If your just wanting to clean the files folder open that folder. select all and delete.....yes delete.
Now minimize the files folder and maximize VSD. Click save and check your files folder out. If nothing has been moved as previously stated, all should be good. If you have moved some items then when you preview your website it will ask you for the location of what is missing.
my example is a theme with just a few pages. remember coffeecup is NOT responsible if you decide to use this suggestion.

Wouldn't this be easier to do with the Remove Files link under the Edit tab? Once opened you can select any or all files to be removed. After deleting files, open every page then save the site. Only the images and files needed will remain. (I just had to do this with the upgrade to VSD 7, as all my unused VSD 6.06 files had not been removed. My lazy)

I think deleting the whole folder and re-saving the site sounds pretty quick and easy! I think I'd go cross-eyed scrolling through all the files in the Remove Files dialogue - besides, all those junk image files that VSD creates won't be in there - you'd still have to go to the files folder to get rid of them.
Thanks for the how-to Bruzer. :D

Deleting the folder and re-saving has worked for me. Just make sure you back up the folder BEFORE you delete it. It's quick and doesn't require any judgement calls.

I tried this on a minor site and it worked! It did leave behind some empty folders that were easy to delete. You guys are awesome!

I guess I'll try this with the main site after the problem with the background is sorted.
