I was having a similar problem and I actually used filezilla and deleted everything in the root folder for my domain and then re-uploaded everything. did the trick for me so far...
NB: A LONG REPLY
THANK YOU to everyone who offered up a suggestion. My site is 96% back - enough that I am not going to worry about it right now. I'm an actor not a web designer - hence my use of a WYSIWYG program like VSD - so when problems like this come up it's really frustrating because I don't really have the time to sit and figure this all out. For those who love this stuff THANK YOU for any clues even those that didn't work or that I already had tried.
TODAY I was able to re-sync my site and miracle of miracles it went thru - mostly - without issue.
Here's what I did TODAY. Frankly I have no idea what one or combo of things made this work.
#1: Disconnected the external hard drive
I recently had issues synching my BB to Outlook - never had an issue before then suddenly problems. A post on a forum suggested turning off Apps before synching. I did that and it worked with BB. I recalled the last successful VSD upload I did without the external drive hooked up so I tried disconnecting that
#2: Previously I did as Eric suggested renamed my file and saved it to a different folder - HOWEVER I noticed it kept referencing the previous folder for files.
TODAY I thought to click on EDIT > REMOVE FILES and take out any files referencing the previous folder
#3: I deleted CC WEB VIDEO PLAYER 2 days ago I seemed to be making progress when I deleted CC Web Video player off my site. I am sad to lose this because I want to play clips of my work in which I appear but taking it out of the website specifically seemed to improve the wonky images a tiny bit but I was still nowhere near a workable site. I totally deleted this program from my hard drive any any files referencing this program. I hope I can put it back but now I'm gun-shy.
#4 For the 12th time at least I deleted all the files from my server. I had started out with this option and it hadn't made a difference - as in images were still messed up, then it got worse where my index page had been the only thing that looked OK it got screwed up too. Not sure if this made any impact but I did it today so I thought I'd include this
#5 I had tried to use an external FTP tool to upload files THIS RESULTED IN A 404 FORBIDDEN ACCESS and no website at all - AIEE! not sure if this was better than a site that was unreadable/unintelligible or not - pick your poison
#6 Paintbrush had wondered about my images. None of them were copy/pasted. I was using a VSD template. I HAD deleted the template images and used the VSD insert image tool to replace them with my owned named images. What PB may have seen online tho was the issue - images totally out of wack - too many problems to name but if you can imagine it it was happening on my site. TODAY I went thru every image, including the Nav Bar and selected ARRANGE > Bring to Front (or) SEND TO BACK as was appropriate for the image. I rarely touch the pictures on my site> It has been up for 2 years so any image problems were new to me.
I will say that I went into the 'file' folder VSD creates and saw that all teh template images - like the nav bar buttons, background et al are labeled img_<number> AND images that I added were assigned and IMG name as well as being in teh folder with the name I gave them PLUS VSD seems to have made images of all my web pages minus text as well, for example my index page with just images on it has an IMG<number> does this sound right?
#7 Many yeas ago I published my site using MS FrontPage. I know that when items were 'too close' my site would get all out of wack. TODAY I went thru the site and triple checked that text boxes and images, including the background image ect were where I had put them to start with 2 years ago. Everything had enough space around it. Again, mostly I edit text in text boxes when I'm making changes not images but it was something I hadn't tried.
FINALLY I tried a re-synch again - this time I left my firewall AND anti-virus ON and everything went thru.
So was it something I changed today? Has it been a connectivity problem with my ISP and web host that for some mysterious reason resolved today? Is it none of the above?
I've used VSD thru several versions and never once encountered a problem like this. I hope I never do again. I can't get my CC Form builder to work and I am uncertain about CC Web Video Player but those are issues for another day.
Thanks again Forum Folks :-)

I wondered what it actually looked like.

I can't hear what I'm looking at.
