Can't start a second VSD session -...

Hi!
I'm a VSD user since the first releases. I just upgraded now from Version 5.9 to 7.0
Not bad, my old sites have been upgraded and I don't see too much differences in the new re-created sites against the old release. I'm living in Europe and most of the problems are related with specials characters (accentuated ones especially). But OK, I can deal with that.
As Web developer, I don't want to re-invent the wheel each time I create a new site!
In VSD Version 5.9, it was possible to open 2 (or more) VSD sessions. It allowed me to have my new site AND another .vnu from an old project opened at THE SAME TIME.
It was then possible to copy some objects from one to the other session.
That was a very nice feature!
Why did you change that ?
Could you please make a build which is NOT testing whenever VSD is already running?

Thanks very much.

That change was made over 2+ years ago Gilles. Looks like you are coming from quite an old version. ; )

There is no longer the option to have 2 or more copies open at the same time.

Actually Scott I would like that ability as well. At the moment I am opening one file using the copy page option. Closing the file, opening another and pasting in. I admit I do not do this often but it would be a handy option. A choice in settings perhaps

Hi,

I asked the same question 2 years ago. Scott then gave the answer that it was too cumbersome to solve problems people had not KNOWING they had two VSD sessions opened at the same time. And I had the same good reason for wanting to do that: I KNOW I have two open sessions, just for the sake of copying objects easily from one session to another.
But there's a workaround (like almost always)...
Copy VSD.exe from your installation folder to (for instance) your desktop. I mean really COPY, not a shortcut! Rename this copy to (for instance) VSD2.exe and copy VSD2.exe back to your installation folder. Now, by clicking VSD.exe and VSD2.exe you can open two sessions...
Maybe you can repeat this trick to open many sessions of VSD at the same time (I tried VSD3, which worked), but of course there's and end somewhere...

have fun, John

Thanks John, about to have two for the price of one :). Just did what you suggested only after copying it back as VSD2 I dragged a shortcut to it to the desktop. Should be a sticky guys

Copy and paste takes on a whole new meaning. Works a treat. Limit I would say would be Ram and the swap file

Well the problem with stickying something like this is that it's not "really" protocol for something that CC will cover if you mess it up. In other words, it's not a CC trick or tip, it's a workaround that has risks (probably doesn't really, but has the potential for them as it's not using the program in it's normal setting). Hopefully I said that right hahaha. Anyways, you're in a sense hacking the program, which could affect how easily you get support for it if something does break your sites. Just a thought, but I won't sticky it for that sorry guys. I'm sure it's a good plan, and works well, but.... :/

Maybe it would be appropriate in the VSD tips and tricks thread?

Yep feel free to add it there, just be sure to include a disclaimer of some sort so people realize that there may not be support for this should it cause any issues. :)

I'll second the disclaimer and also make sure users that use this method that are asking for help let everyone know they have been doing so.;)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Thanks John for the good idea!

I tried out with Windows 7 (64bits), it works perfectly...
Don't forget to set the property "run as administrator" for both exe.
By the way, I did your trick with a more "direct" method:
- Select the VSD program folder.
- Copy VSD.exe
- Paste it (you MUST have admin credentials).
- Rename it to VSD2.exe (or something else)
- Set "run as admin" property.
As said: it works!
This trick is only intended to run an additional VSD instance in order to have two sites open and allowing to copy-paste from one to the other.

And just a word for Scott:
Clear that my upgrade is a "big" step! The reason is simple: I never upgraded from 5.9 to 6.0 because it messed up all my sites... and V6 brought me more problems than improvements.
As I wrote, try to create a complex application using VSD, Javascript, PHP and supporting foreign languages like I did. You will see that it was realizable with VSD 5.9, impossible with VSD6.x and now, I found a way to fool the VSD 7.0 generated html code using scripts. The resulting look is acceptable and I can use it for my future developments.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
