Can Not Open VSD site file from Host...

Okay, I really blew it. Somehow I blew up my website on my host (Hostmonster.com). I corrupted the files on my PC. Hostmonster kindly restored my site from their archives, and then sent me the files for my site. My problem is I cannot "open" those files because VSD wants to find a "vsd document" not the actual files for the site. Can someone please help me?

If you do not have the .VNU file (project file) then you will not be able to edit those pages. You will have to build your website over again in VSD.

Oh no! The files are still in tact on the host. Can I somehow download those files to my PC, then use or edit them?

Hi Stan, check on your server and see if there is a folder call backups. You should find older vnu files in there that you can use.

Steve, you mean the host server correct? Yes there were numerous backups so I was happy. However, when I downloaded them via FTP, I couldn't point to it via the correct "vsd document" (after "File...Open..."). Can you advise me? It just kept opening the old corrupted files.

FYI, I tried this technique which seemed to address my problem, but it kept opening my old corrupted files:

By "corrupted" files, the site opens fine, but without pictures or graphics.

Point one, how do you know the vnu file is corrupt? Is it just that photos and stuff are 'missing'? Or do you get an actual error message?

This is why I ask ... VSD looks for files in very specific places when you create your web site. If you load a picture from a directory then VSD expects to find it there. After a re-build, if you download the backup .vnu file and try and open it in VSD, it should open, but content may be missing! That's because that content is not on your hard disk where VSD expects to find it. Make sense?

What you need to do ( since you say you have the content from your server ) is simply load that content back into VSD so the file knows where it is.

When building ( or re-building ) a website, what I do is create 1 folder for graphics. Every picture I put into the website get moved/duplicated to this directory first. Then I add it to the site. If I ever need to re-build I just dump all the graphics back into the same directory on my hard disk and VSD knows where to find them.

Good luck. Oh, let us know if that .vnu file really is corrupt, or if it's just not finding content.
If it is corrupt, there really is nothing more you can do except re-build from scratch. :P

Thanks Gunsmoke,

You are correct, I believe I mis-spoke. Carefully looking at my site, it cannot find the pictures and graphics. I assumed the file was "corrupted". It seems my mind and articulation are the corrupted items! I will follow your directions. I don't understand though why I cannot recover the .vnu (which I have from Windows backup) and recover and download the files from my host server (which I have) and fire it up. Does the .vnu still think the image/graphics are in a different location?

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
