Can I import an html file into VSD? -...

I had a computer crash. All my files were uploaded to my site successfully, but they are now .html files.

How can I rebuild it in VSD? Can I export them as a VSD file in the CC editor?

I'd hate to have to go back in and recreate all of it.

Thanks

Unfortunately no.

Try looking on your website for the backup folder and see if you can find a .vnu file. If so download that and you should be good to go, otherwise I'm afraid you may have to start again.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.

We offer two different applications that you can choose from which will allow you to create your site: HTML Editor and Visual Site Designer.

The main difference between HTML Editor and Visual Site Designer is access to the raw HTML. Visual Site Designer will generate all the necessary HTML for you and allow you to focus on the design of your page. You can insert text, images, links, etc. and drag them anywhere on the page. You can even create shapes such as rectangles and circles, or add effects like glow, bevel, and shadow. Because everything is stored in the .vnu file for Visual Site Designer, it cannot open preexisting HTML files to edit.

The HTML Editor, on the other hand, can open any HTML file and edit it with either the Code Editor or Visual Editor. The Visual Editor will also allow you to insert text, images, links, etc., but you cannot create shapes or effects within the program. Those would need to be done outside the software and inserted as images. Because the HTML Editor edits one file at a time, as opposed to the entire site, you have more control over things like filenames, directory structure, etc., and how these elements are uploaded to the server.

I was afraid of that. Isn't there any way to go into the editor and tell it to either export to a vnu file or may save as??

Sorry, but no. If you have lost the VNU file, you are pretty much out of luck. ;(

Sandy - I feel your pain, I too had a crash while my back-up hard drive was plugged in. Lost everything  I haven't had any luck with downloading the .vnu file, but it was possible to open all the pages in the CC HTML Editor. I have a small site (8 pages), so rather than re-do it in the Editor (would have to learn html/css), I copied all of my background stuff, graphics and text then went right back to VSD with it. It only took a few minutes to get the pages layed out and add the navigation, now I'm plodding along trying to recreate all the stuff I lost in the crash (that wasn't on the site yet).
If I work real slow maybe the new VSD will be available before I upload this site :D

I too have felt the limitations of both software programs. It seems where one fails in features, the other picks it up but what a problem when they don't function hand in hand.

My wish is to one day see both of the softwares work hand in hand and complement each other. What a dream to see HTML Editor 2010 turn your web pages in .vsd and the Visual Site Designer to export your web pages into html locally to edit in HTML Editor.

Do you think we will have then work together?

Probably not. You can go now from VSD to the HTML Editor very easily right now, but going from an editor to VSD would be very difficult if not impossible. The main reason is because for Visual Site Designer to function, the code must be all a certain way. If someone has an existing Website where the code is just a mess, the software would have to make assumptions on how to clean that up. That can be a nightmare!

That is so true Scott.

I was in the wish mode. What if the HTML Editor imprinted something within the HTML page and let the VSD know that it was developed by the HTML Editor.

I was hoping even further that the HTML Editor would be able to save your created website as a .VSD Files but only if it was totally created by its HTML Editor.

High Hopes I guess.

lets not forget the 'backup' folder created on the server that holds VNU files.
