Building Website (not responding) and...

I just wondered if anyone has encountered the following problems in VSD 7.

1. When saving, the "building website" box and progress bar freezes almost halfway through and the box reads "(not responding)". Strangely enough it appears to continue saving in the background until it's complete.

2. When publishing the site to my server VSD builds the website twice - the first time "not responding" comes up, and then the second time it appears to run ok. Then an FTP box appears saying that 'the file " filepath" cannot be found.' It then gives me the option to continue uploading but after clicking 'yes' approx. twelve more boxes appear with different 'missing' files. The thing is the filepaths to these files haven't existed for quite some time because I re-saved my project in VSD with a new filename.

I have noticed that most of these 'missing' files are related to my flash menu. Thankfully, though, once I've trawled past all these boxes the upload continues as normal. When I first uploaded my site the flash menus were missing, but I was able to find the necessary files in my 'website' folder and upload them myself with CC FTP program.

The end result was ok but i don't want to have to trawl through all these boxes every time I re-publish my site when adding new pages or editing. I don't understand why it couldn't find these files that are there in my website folder! I am also a little concerned that there maybe a "saving" problem when the screen freezes for awhile.

I'd appreciate any help towards solving these issues. I have some screenshots but it won't let me upload them here because they're over 100 KB.

Cheers

OK...so no one wants to help me! :( blubber blubber!!!

Well, after taking another look, I found the solution to problem 2. above. So just in case someone else has this problem in the future, here's what I did.

In VSD, I went to Edit > Remove Files... and found what turned out to be 16 files with an old filepath that no longer exists. (During the months I had been building my site, I had moved some folders around to better organise things, so now VSD couldn't find them). I then ticked these files and removed them. So far so good.

BUT I then found out that my legitimate menu files were missing from my main Website folder!! Uh oh!! Thankfully I had taken note of the flash files that I needed for my menu, which were saved in another folder. So I then just copied and pasted the necessary files into my main website folder. VSD now publishes my website perfectly without any missing file boxes! Job done!

I hope this helps

Sorry I didn't get to you Gerry but it's a busy time of year for me. You have just learned one of the basic things that I try to stress to every VSD user. Any images or files that you add to your VSD pages should all be placed in a dedicated folder before you use them then when you want to add them you use the tools that VSD offers and browse to this dedicated folder to add them. This way if you want to back up your site or make changes to these files their all in one place. This system works great because if you want to make a change to lets say a header image that you have on your site you can make a new one and save it to this folder with the same name and VSD will upload the image after seeing that it has been changed. The location of this folder has only one limitation. Don't put it inside your actual mywebsitename_website folder as you could cause some issues with VSD if you tried to add a folder to VSD that was the same name. I keep mine just outside the mywebsitename_website folder and usually call mywebsitename files.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

I have the annoyance that Gerry mentions in the second part of his questions. When I go to publish my site, it gives numerous error boxes indicating that files are 'missing'. These are all files related to a form that has not been part of the website for several iterations. Any advice on cleaning this up? I'm not sure if the above answer addresses this specifically or not.

Write down the name of the files when the error pops up then go to "Edit" then "Remove files". Now browse this directory and check the boxes on the left of all the files you wrote down. Try publishing to confirm you got them all.:)

Glad to see you got that sorted Dennis!

Thanks for the reply Rolly. Virtually all of the files that I use for VSD are initially stored in folders outside my main_website folder, which VSD created, just like you organise yours. I have separate CC Flash file folders for Jukebox files, Photo Gallery files, etc, and folders for images and documents and PDF files, etc.

I think the initial problem was that I originally created a 'flash menu' folder within the VSD main_website folder, and then I moved it outside this folder, which later caused the missing files.

What I still don't understand though is that my flash menu files were being saved by VSD in the main_website folder OK, so that previewing the pages were always OK. The problem began when I began uploading the site to my server. And then when I did remove the 'missing files' in VSD as mentioned earlier, the 'new' menu files in the main_website folder disappeared - even though they were in the right place!! So the incorrect filepath files were removed, but the correct files in the correct filepath were removed also!!

A bit bizarre but I solved it eventually by putting the correct files back in from the 'menu folder' situated on the outside of the main_website folder.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
