Big gaps opening up upon preview/publish

Hi guys, been here before but under a different username/website. now have the full version of the VSD but doesn't seem to offer the features I thought it would, namely justified text!

So, had to insert the text from a html editor into a box (max html box size is 2000px on the height!!!??) as justified & fixed to 800px width.

I'm using Tahoma (one of the safe fonts right?) and no matter whether I use standard body size, or one size smaller I get the same problem, but proportionally similar.

In the html editor I can work out the height of the html text box (e.g. 6000px) so when dumped into VSD I can set out the lower part of the webpage around this figure to get the website to line up correctly, however upon previewing (in IE8/9, chrome, FF they all display the problem the same) the gaps between the text boxes (or html boxes) are massive, and without spending literally days using trial and error it isn't going to work.

I was really hoping the full paid version of VSD would have a better way of aligning these boxes?

Afraid haven't got the site online as there is a current webpage occupying the space, might be able to slot it in somewhere for demo purposes?

I'm thinking its to do with the font set installed on my computer and its somehow a slightly different size (upto 20% difference though?). Is there any logical way around this problem?

Thanks!

^^ That page is complete bar the massive gap at the bottom before the footer. Or is there a better way of attaching a footer to a website in VSD that floats? I'm trying to avoid use of flash.

^^ this page still has loads to do/upload, but the formatting is how it appears on mine, i.e. huge space between the first set of text and the price table, however calc's of the size of the first box and the VSD preview show them perfectly, its just the browsers interpreting the fonts a different size?

Take a look at these pages. I'm sure you'll find something you like.:)

Richard, I'm no expert here, but I wonder if having the second doctype ("strict" vs. VSD "loose") in there might cause things to go wonky.

I usually leave all that header stuff off of pages inserted into VSD pages. I just put the content in the HTML box (with a Div or Iframe) and include some styling if needed (<style type="text-css">styles here</style>).

I think i also remember something about NOT copying text from an HTML page into VSD as it causes issues because VSD html code is in some way different :: don't shoot me down here folks, I DONT DO CODE :P

If you are going to put the text in VSD why not just open a text box and insert the actual text in that and then adjust to suit. Use Eric's Justification tip.

VSD can handle the size of the text, just make sure the page size supports it The text from the editor has all sorts of formatting that is not compatible. VSD outputs its own code adjusted text.
As far as a floating footer that may require a script to control, and that could be put in a HTML box.

^ thanks Prism, tried the justification add in a html box, but same issue.

I've found by limiting each box to ONE paragraph (an absolute nightmare to work on) which limits the change in text size/spacing/location to around 10% overall gain/loss, but still its all over the shop.

I'm really lost as to why VSD does not have a justification tool? I was hoping the paid for version would have this feature vs. the free demo version is limited in some way, but it seems not?

At this point I have now spent about 20hours on this website, when using this software it should have really only taken 5-10hours for the whole thing. 20hours is the sort of time it would have taken me cutting & pasting bits of example HTML from all over the place and trying it over and over again until it works. Kind of strikes me that the software does have a LOT of limitations?

Or have I somehow paid for the pro version and ended up just downloading the trial version?

Something you could try. Create a text place holder in VSD. Then using word or a program like Jarte, paste you text in one of those programs and after formatting paste the outputted html version in where you created the space. It is RTF formatted text that I inject with my CMS system. The caveat is that it has to be done outside VSD and the page so changed would replace the similar one that VSD uploads.

Hate suggesting this but what the heck

If you place a shape on the page, say oblong where you want your text, and put your text in as button text, it will always be perfect on all browsers.

Cheers viv, that actually works great! Perfect for position critical stuff :)

Prism - will try that on the next page and see how I get on. As it is I pump everything thats text through notepad just to clear any formatting off it, seems to work for other programs, and so far works well for VSD.

Cheers!

My next challenge is forming a drop down menu, so will have a search about as I've seen loads of threads about them. Thanks.
