I have been adjusting page size to accommodate content. Is this prudent.
I have a 14" monitor I use and sometimes I go to the local Library to check my site. But could anyone tell me what is the best general size to set that suits most viewers no matter what size their monitor is.

CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!
But I code all my web pages to 200px by 200px. That way they can be viewed by smart phones on those little screens.

Sorry Tom I never came back promptly. What are you saying. 768 is the go but no then you say 200x200. I understand that if you are targeting I phones for example.
Seems like two versions are required for the future. I guess the I Pad would be in the same category as my small monitor
From The site you referenced.
Today, most visitors are using a screen resolution higher than 1024x768 pixels:

Prism, the ideal are sites that adapt to whatever device is detected, so they display differently depending on whether it's a phone, pad, laptop...
But VSD only does static pages. I've found that pages under 1000px (960, 980) show up fine on all my various devices (netbook, 15" and 18" laptop, 2 different smartphones, and a friend's Ipad).
If you have SDrive, you could also consider using one of your accounts for a smaller, simpler version of your main site.

If you look at the table for the 85%, the smallest resolution is 768.

Since VSD doesn't create fluid/elastic pages, one just has to plan for what's going to work best on a variety of screen sizes, or make different sites for various devices. The ideal (in VSD) is not so wide it causes a horizontal scroll on smaller screens, but not so small that it looks like a sidebar on wider screens.
As for large monitors/wider screens, many people take advantage of the space to have more than one thing displayed at a time. I wouldn't worry about designing pages to fill a 1900px wide resolution, for example.
Here's the CC forum page size: Width: 960px – Height: 2998px
Which looks just fine on my laptop (1440px wide) and my phone.
Statistics are important information. W3Schools.com is for people with an interest for web technologies. This fact indicates that the figures below might not be 100% true for the average internet users. The average internet-user might have a lower screen resolution.

Thanks paintbrush. I see CC's technique is to let the white background fill the sides. Confusing ain't it.
I go for the 960 x 600. It seems to fit without scroll bars. It is only on pages I have something to say I increase height a little. say 5000px

Should be fine then
You can still have a different background beyond your actual page. Then, on larger screens there's something to fill up space, while on small devices it probably won't show – not that it matters on a tiny cell phone screen
