Banner has disappeared

Hi,

Been using CC for about a year now. I have a business website that I update roughly monthly, with a minor copy change i.e.a new special for the month. So it's been many months since I delved in to the depths of 'building' the website since, hence my grey matter is being severely stretched.

Problem I have is that the banner that has sat at the top of my website, since I first built it, has decided to disappear! I made no changes to it, or the file structure on my hard drive. I simply changed some text on the home page and uploaded...but no banner. Interesting fact is that when I preview using the CC preview button, the banner is there in all it's glory!

Can anyone assist? website is balingupheights.com.au I have also attached a copy of the file structure which seem to show the balingup .swf & .fire files there.

Thanks - Brian

Sorry..tried uploading the file as a PDF but the forum doesn't accept PDFs so I tried a conversion to a jpg. I knew it wasn't clear but thought it might be clear enough to get by. My bad! Any tips on how to get a screen grab in to a format that can be uploaded?

Hiya ballen,

Just take a screenshot and save it as a .JPG file in Windows Paint (or your fav image editing software) and upload it to your server. Then just post a link to it in here and we should be able to get to it that way :)

Brian,

I think I know the problem. I went to your site and viewed the source for the header swf file.

<div class="Object4096"> <OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
codebase="http://active.macromedia.com/flash2/cabs/swflash.cab#version=4,0,0,0"
ID=balingup WIDTH=615 HEIGHT=196>
<PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="balingup.swf">
<PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high>
<PARAM NAME=loop VALUE=true>
<EMBED src="balingup.swf" loop=true quality=high WIDTH=615 HEIGHT=196 TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash"
PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"> </EMBED>
</OBJECT>

I see that your swf file for the header is called balingup.swf

So I tried pulling up the file in my browser and it plays a blank screen. I know this because if I modified the file name of the .swf file, I get a file page not found error. So the flash file is on your server but it actually has a problem. Your website code in VSD looks fine.

You can see what I mean by clicking the two urls and seeing the results:

http://www.balingupheights.com.au/balingup.swf
http://www.balingupheights.com.au/balingup01.swf

So I suggest that you try this:

1. upload the balingup.swf file again and see if it works.

2. If that fails then go back to firestarter and open up the banner and see if it is correct. If it is, then resave it and then upload it again to the server

3. If that fails, then the file is just probably corrupted for some reason. Make a fresh one and save it as the balingup.swf file and then upload.

One of those 3 should fix. But you never know computers.... haa haa

Let us know if that fixes the problem.

Have a great day,

Kim

Thanks Kim. (and Jo Ann for the screen capture tip - but how do you keep the file size under 100kb?)

Still no joy I'm afraid. I have done a number of things to try and identify exactly what's causing the problem. No doubt it's something simple, but I can't track it down.

Here's what I have done:
    The banner works fine when I preview the website using the VSD preview button, so I assumed that this meant the .swf file is OK
    To check, I have opened the file in Firestarter, and previewed it...all OK
    I then re-saved the file in Firestarter and then copied the html code and added the three files, .fire .htm .swf

But still a blank.

I then created a simple test file and loaded it in the same way. This worked OK.

I don't believe that there is an issue with the Firestarter created file because if this was the case it would not preview in VSD. So I suppose this points to some form of upload issue.

The upload process I have used is:
    Save the file in Firestarter
    Copy the HTML code
    Insert the code on the web page, using the insert html tool in VSD
    Added the three files.

Any help appreciated. As I said above, I suspect this is some simple issue, but I use VSD (and Firestarter) infrequently now, so my skills and knowledge are far less now than when I first built the website last year.

I had one other thought. I recently upgraded my operating system to Windows 7, and had to download the CC software again. Could it be a problem with a file that was created under on older version of Firestarter (probably a question better placed on the Firestarter forum I know), But this could just be a red herring!

So I tried to load the template version of my website, built back in Sept of last year, just 'till I had fixed teh problem. Banner is now working! But many other parts of the site look ' corrupted'.

Check out the mess :( www.balingupheights.com.au

May be a completely separate issue I know..........

Grasping at straws here, Brian (know nothing about Flash), but have you tried adding the image files for your banner over again? Click on add files under settings in the top menu. I've got a simple java-script slide show (3 images), last time I updated VSD it lost the images for the slide show - just those 3 pics. So I had a blank spot on the page until I realized the images just weren't there anymore and had to re-insert them.
