What Files are Started Up first when...

Howdy do,

http://www.the-web-seeker.com/

I am using some of your templates with the Visual Design, and
also built my home page/s from scratch using it...

Setup a little system to save .vnu in Test area folder...
Then when happy, save to FranksSite folder as a vnu...
Then copy contents only to a like named folder which is where additional edits are done... Favicon addtion... Counters addition etc.

The main question when a user Hits the site... which file is
NORMALLY used....?

I've been editing the index.html and it does not appear to be the
main one....

This maybe awfully basic, but where I'm at... index.htm, html,
default.htm html.. duplicates ???
Is this for older browsers or different browsers ?

Appreciate some inputs here,

Thank you,

Seeker

Hi seeker.
The VSD makes index .html, .htm, and default .htm and .htm files. All of these upload to your server when using the built-in ftp. Why? Because different web servers are set up differently, and want the "home page" to be called either "index" or "default" and have either ".html" or ".htm"

When you set up your web hosting plan, the web host tipically sends an email letting you know which one to use. Since VSD has no idea which one you need, it makes all 4.
If index.html does not work, try index.htm....make a small change and upload to see if that change took place. Only 4 choices, so make small changes to the html file until you find the proper one.
You have all 4 on your server now, so you could take them off, and upload one at a time to see which one it needs or which will work. It seems that they all work when entering the exact name, but I can't tell which one is the "default" for your web host.

Cliff,

I understand what you mean... thought it may be something along those lines..
Now that brings me to another question...
Can you read/see the files on my server?
I am aware some things are visible, but not the extent.

Again thank you,

I can see your web pages, if that's what you mean. Your links work, and there is information on every page.
Your "home" links point to:
http://www.the-web-seeker.com/index.html

notice the "index.html" at the end. I don't know if that's because you pointed the link to the index.html page, or if it's because your server loads that page as your home page. My guess is that's the one to use. (just a guess. )

I can see your example website page, and the examples. Looks like you are trying to start up a web design business. Best of luck.

Cliff,

I'm retired.... Senior Systems analyst from major
Corp..... Built couple of houses, Barn... septic system.
this last 8 years.... been away.. form software...

Been doing a small amount of work for another site
music forum... excellent Yamaha forum....
Kinda liked the net stuff, two folks there got me a bit
more interested... and I had this hairbrained scheme
to maybe make a few bucks...
Not missing any meals, but little $$ would allow me to
buy some more music equipment....
Like the net needs another wanna be... I have this idea
i'm pursuing, and its great sport...
And the CC mega pak gave me tools that allows a person
to jump right into the mix of things... A bit dangerous
I am... maybe...
Just cannot say enough complimentary things about
CC and their folks.... Seen and did a lot of software
things in my 64 years... and they have a really great
line of products...kissey kissey, huh... it true...
I've got a lot more to do on the site... but getting
incredible amount of hits.... the CC advisor page
on page titling search engine optimization etc. really
works.... put something new up yesterday afternoon,
and Google found me that evening... just floored me...
I have the Google mapper, not sure of all of its capabilities
yet.. but once my pages are more intact... will certainly
use it..Main obstacle now is form building. My specialty
was databases used by Auto ID data collection systems,
for product tracking... Big money in that, but dont want
the commitments and pressure anymore.. I'm retired now
13 years this year...Born again hippie I never was...

Appreciate your help,

We'll probably talk again...

Hi Seeker,

Just a word of caution. Although the CC programs are fantastic, they do have their limitations. Be carefull when accepting work for website creation that you understand those limits and how to work within them.
Form builder is getting much better, with the ability to save to MySQl, but there seems to be some difficulty getting it to work for everyone. Just make sure to test every function that you may be offering your services for to be sure that you can do what the customer needs.

Oh yeah, and have fun with it...retirement should be enjoyable.

I'm thinking that web servers are set up to use all af them (index.htm, index.html, default.htm, default.html). I can't imagine a server admin only offering only one like default.htm and not the rest. And would be shocked if index.html was not included.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

Tom, you are correct. Most servers offer all 4 options, but if you load all 4 pages, then just change "index.htm", you may not see your changes because the server could be using one of the other pages as it's "default" setting. If you want to work on the web page using your cpanel/file manager for example, it helps to know which page is being used, so that you don't have to modify all 4 of them.
Also, when someone switches over from VSD to an html editor...same thing. Which one of the 4 would you change and upload? I think if you remove any 3 of those pages, the last one standing will win and work. The most common page to leave as a home page is "index.html", however I have seen dome of the free web servers opt for "default.html"

Cliff,

Yes I'm aware of limitations for Code Generators...
I sat in two shows many years ago at West Coast Computer
Faire... The Visual Basic Intro, and Borland's Delphi...

Couldn't hardly wait to get home and purchase the Delphi,
it was quantum leap ahead of MS VB at that time...
But I had 6 years of pascal under my belt, so the backend
editing and coding for the really nice things worked nicely...

Appreciate your inputs... in other words dont get in water
over your head.... Good point, well taken....

I am putting limits of what to offer customers, for two
reasons... one is pricing... Simplicity means less time,
therefore more economical... and Also Maintenance...
Although I have I.S. background a good 19 years was within
A 100 person Maintenance dept....Help, support, and maintenance
are animals neglected many times....

Again thank you,
