Greeting All! I'm new to CC software and definitely new to ftp:D ing. Always used http uploads where the program I used gave me the option to upload all; overwriting existing or upload just changed pgs. With the built in ftp in CC VSD does it give you this option? Or do I need to clean up prior to uploading through my hosting account? I'm not ready to upload anything and won't be until I have all pages ready. I have so many more ?'s but they're specific to the CC programs I purchased. (PhotoGallery). I'll post those ?'s in their respective forums.
Thanks for your assistance/patience

VSD will overwrite all files on your server which it needs to for uploading.

From time to time you should do a "Save As..." (save as another name, or in another directory) in the program to clean out the "files" folder on your hard drive; you may need to clean out the "files" folder on your server as well.

There are no upload options as far as specific pages (so far) because of the way VSD collects images and other files.

Feel free to ask more questions! :)

Strange; I thought I replied last night. Oh well. I use "save as" before making major changes in my video projects. I noticed the "files" folder has every changed and original img,btn and obj saved in there. Can it be cleaned out manually before uploading? Why does VSD save the original. I chose one of the templates. I just want to change text (btn, content) and pictures. Is there any way to change the main Navbar text so that all the pages titles and text labels change too? Do I have to open each page and make all the changes on each. This is taking me alot of time and having to hit "save" (I usually do after each change)or even "save as" is creating alot more time and files. I also noticed that Photo Gallery puts it's pictures in the "files" folder also. My first attempt when south when VSD saved files went to the same folder. The Gallery had btn img's and all! Maybe I should have gone with the HTML editor instead/with. I'll keep trying. I'm up for any suggestions on an efficient work flow.

What you should do is make the changes to the template that will be common to all pages then save this page as standard one to copy for any additional pages that you add. If you want extra files cleaned out one way is to do a save as to a new folder. Another way is to save your website under a different name.

Maybe my problem is that I'm starting out with a five page based theme and trying to change all the pages. Are there one page templates? I understand what your suggesting. Do all CC programs collect img's and files the same way VSD does.

No, VSD is really the only program that works the way your saying and it does this because it really meant for the person that either doesn't have the time to code or the time to learn how to code. It needs to work this way to make sure the user doesn't have to worry so much about getting all the needed files uploaded to the server.

No, but you can delete all the other pages once a template is open and then when creating a new page, select the copy page box. Then all you gotta do is delete all the fluff you don't need on the page you're building and insert new fluff. :D

Make sure you don't save over your template with a regular save though (VSD doesn't distinguish between templates and websites.)

Aha! seems so obvious, I guess I thought since the theme had 5 linked pages and looked pretty much like what I wanted to start with (except for text labels, content and img's etc..) I would work with all of them just changing what I needed to suite myself.

This to me, is the toughest part to understand. When to "save" and when to "save as". I'm coming from Frontpage '03 where "saving" often has become a habit and it would only save the page that was opened at the time. I didn't want to give ms +$$ for expressionWeb and CC (IMHO) is superior. Thanks Zac and Eric for your patience! I guess it's time for this old dog to learn some new tricks! One more question. I noticed in other threads people making changes to certain pages with notepad (i.e. XML, etc.), is this possible with the html files VSD generates? or will that corrupt things?

You can make changes to your code with notepad but keep in mind that if you republish the site with VSD it will over write those changes.
