Paypal and Gift Certificates

I hope that I can explain this properly. I have a client who wishes to offer gift certificates through his website. I have created a few gift certificates in pdf format that he wants to use. I have setup a Paypal buy now button with 5 options for purchasing a certificate, i.e. each one with a different dollar amount. Presently, the only way to distribute them appears to be emailing them to client after payment is made on Paypal. The paypal button allows for choices of gift certificates, but only one redirect back to a thankyou page I have created for client. Therefore, he will need to email the client the purchased gift certificate. What I would like to do, based on the amount of the gift certificate, is redirect client to an individual page (based on dollar amount) where they can download the purchased gift certificate, rather than rely on the client to email them. If any of this makes sense, I would appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thanks.....

Eric. thanks for your response. I read Paypal's directive about IPN's and remain confused about what I need to do on my end to implement; and are the responses automatic, or is there a manual response required after receiving payment?

Sorry for the delay......yes I have the Coffeecup Editor and was able to open the file. It looks as if there would have to be some changes to the code in order to get it to work for the client. I don't have any experience with php, so I am a little lost as to what I need to do with the file. I understand that I would need to create a page in the website that would include this php file to listen for activity from Paypal. If everything is ok, it would permit the sale and then direct the client to a download page for the gift certificate. Is that right? Thank you for your help.....

Thanks......that would help. I have spent the last day or so reviewing the script and searching for explanations of how it works. It seems it could have a number of variable inputs that would allow information to be transferred to a "thank you for your purchase" page on a website that would allow an immediate download of the purchased product. It could also generate emails to the seller and buyer about the completed purchase. And all of this helps to add a layer of security to the transaction. Where and what the "variable" information is placed in the script is the confusing part. I do appreciate your guidance.
