Lengths are usually not a problem. Of course smaller font sizes and less spacing will reduce tthe length. Personally I don't like to go over about 2000px (twice width). Sometimes the content deems it necessary. I'm sure others have their opinions.

Iframes are not normally a good idea unless there is no other way. They do not index well with the search engines (page within a page) and links can open in the iframe. iframes however do have there uses. Eg.I use Shozam photo gallery and it opens in an Iframe to maintain the site theme. Another example would be a web calendar such as localendar.
