Hi,

I have tried to find a way to export a Powerpoint presentation I created in Powerpoint 2002 by using the flash tool with no success. I tried to find ways to convert it to video from articles I read on the web, such as using Nero, but it requires that Powerpoint be 2003 or higher. I have tried downloading software applications such as Aura, but that didn’t work. I also tried OpenOffice and it didn’t export it. Does anyone use Powerpoint 2002 and successfully exported a Powerpoint onto a website? If you have, would you please let me know what steps you took to do it? I don’t have a problem in buying the latest version of Powerpoint but if I can use Powerpoint 2002, I’d prefer to do that.

Thanks,
Vito

I put together online lectures for our university here using Power Point and Adobe Presenter. Presenter packages it all up into a file that can be opened as a web page.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.

Would it be an option to save the PowerPoint presentation as a website and just link to it from VSD? That's what I did once back in 2000, don't remember which Office version I had then.
Ha en riktig god dag!

Hi Vito,
I had no problem exporting a Powerpoint (2003 and older) presentation as SWF, after importing it in Impress (Open Office) first. You could also use the JPG export of Powerpoint itself and use these JPG's in VSD. And finally, you could link the PP file directly as a document in VSD. Or export the presentation as a website, as Inger suggested, upload this site to your webspace using FTP software (in a separate folder please) and then link to it in VSD. It all works fine....

Hi John,

Thanks so much! Bare with me as I am not technical. I opened up the Powerpoint I created in MS Powerpoint, in Open Office; is this how I was to export it? I looked to see if I could export it from Microsoft PP but I didn't see an option to do so. What is SWF? I tried to see if I could save as and select SWF in Open Office but I didn't see that as an option.

Thanks for everyone's assistance.

Yes, open it in Open Office and choose EXPORT. There you can choose SWF, which is FLASH, which you can use in VSD. But maybe you want to show the file on an IPAD, then you're stuck....You can also save it as a PDF. Anybody can read a PDF file, so if you choose this and attach the file (as a document) to a link in VSD, you're saved by Steve Jobs...:-)

John,

Thanks! I opened it in Open Office and saved it as an swf. I went to VSD and selected the flash tool and then draged the mouse over the body of the page so that I could place the pp. I located the folder I saved the swf to but the folder is empty. The window that pops up is looking for an xml file. I know I am doing something wrong but not sure what. I attached 2 jpeg screen shots of what I did hoping you might be able to tell me what I did wrong. I even tried saving the file type as xml and that didn't work. Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Vito,

You didn't do anything wrong! The add flash tool adds Flash presentations made by one of the Coffeecup Flash tools. Those software products produce the needed XML file automatically.

But there's an easy way to show your flash file (or any other file, the word 'document' in VSD is a little bit misleading): add it as a document to a link (a button or a text link) and use a new window for the link (target=new window). The flash file will be uploaded automatically when you upload your site.

And there's an expert way: show the flash files in a new window using javascript inside an HTML box. To make the flash file upload automatically, you have to add it first in VSD. Go to >settings>add files, browse for the SWF file and choose add, then OK. This way, using javascript, you can control the size (and other things) of the new window, which can't be done in the easy way.

Here is an example site: http://www.johnvanhulst.com/vito/index.html . It shows the easy and the advanced way. You can download the VSD design there too. After downloading the VSD design, look at the javascript code inside the html boxes and adapt it to your own situation (if you want to use the expert solution, it's not that difficult :-)).....

The SCUBA file is a Powerpoint presentation made by my wife, in Dutch, converted to a swf in Open Office...

If you have any questions, let me know

Success, John

Hi John,

Thanks! I tried the easy way and it works!!! Now I have a stupid question. I tried the expert way and added the swf file in VSD. When I cilkced the preview button, the powerpoint didn't display. I am guessing that I missed a step with the java script. Was I supposed to go to another window and do something else? Thaks so much for your being pateint. I know I need to take a course on this! If I have to do something with java script, is it through html editor?

Thanks!
Vito

John,

PS: I played with it as I felt like I was being defeated! I tried the expert way and got it to work, somewhat. I deleted the files, saved and then started over again. I added the swf file. I went to html editor and opened up the file that had the powerpoint I saved in Open Office as an swf and copied the html. From there, I went to VSD and pasted it in the html body and saved. When I click the preview button in VSD, the page opens up and has a link that I made, Click to see the powerpoint. When I click on it, I get the message below. Then I thought, maybe it's not linked properly. So when I click the link button, I get the Microsoft window that tells me I received an error and asks me if I want to send or not send the report. I think I am close but not sure what I did wrong or what I need to fix. Whatever help you can provide me will be deeply appreciated! Thanks so much for the education!!

Vito
