I don't want to post a url but I will describe what I want to do (in VSD). (tried it the other day for hours...every which way I could imagine, used a tutorial video for inspiration, and got close but not close enough, but maybe someone here can take me further.
I have as my homepage background a jpg (text & graphics) created in Photoshop. On that page, I can insert (one only, it seems) a transparent PNG that I can make a link to another page in my website without that PNG looking like a black rectangle on the website.
What I'd like to do on another spot of the homepage is place another transparent PNG over a square that would become a mouseover to an image that looks much like the homepage but with some of the text and graphics removed and replaced with others. The purpose would be to have the new image serve as an example or portfolio to something hinted at in the first image. Even better, that PNG could be a mouseover and link to a page that IS the mouseover image so that people can explore the new one without having to hold their mouse on the one part, if they wish.
Again, I got close--was able to create the general process, but the transparent PNG became black; either that or the replacement image did.
Mouseover jpgs on PNGs?
Problem solved! Work-around found, that is.
My idea with the pngs was that they would be transparent overlays of the jpg background, and I could link from them to other pages. Jpgs didn't seem feasible because they were not transparent even if they were created to be so. Since time is of the essence, I finally decided to make jpg copies of parts of the jpg background and place those just right over the background before linking them to other pages. It took a day of speedy clicking, but I'm linked up properly and completely now!

Jennifer, I am curious as to what you were trying to do. It seems similar to what I need to do. I have an image with text and the text needs to be linked to other pages. I am playing around with the image mapping software but I would like some kind of action to take place on the text beyond a tag.
When you made the copies of the images to place over the background image, how did you set them up to stay in the correct spot across browsers? did you use tables?
