I am hoping someone can help me, I have an image with a white square background. I was wondering if there is any way to eliminate it with Photoshop elements or gimp? Thank You in advance!

I am trying to eliminate the white square around the emblem. If that makes sense.

Can you give me a quick rundown on how you did that? They both look great.

-Loaded the image in photoshop
-duplicated the layer so the original is preserved
-select menu, then color range, then used the paint dabber to select white background
-adjust fuzziness to pick up all the white to the edges
-delete white
-inverse mask then add a layer, and paint in white inside the inverted layer and then slip that layer in behind the copy of the original layer. This will replace any white the color select too out of the crest.
-save as a png using save for website option.
-add a shadow layer and save a second copy.

final PSD ends up withe the original layer turned off, then the white inverted mask layer then the crest on top.
