Because IE doesn't play by the rules and FF does (or at least moreso than IE)...
The ALT tag was not intended to be a "mouseover" effect. It is there to allow access to persons with disabilities, or those with "text browsers", to know what is supposed to be showing in that box.

thanx Phil. i just can't seem to find an html code that will show a text on an image on mouseover. i guess i will just make a second img with the text on that.

I just gave it a shot in both browsers ( IE7 & FF) and it worked fine. are your browsers up to date FF 3.52 I believe.
are you doing a mouseover and alt text or just 1 image and alt text?
could try adding title="text" behind the alt tag see if that works.
I am just curious
Jo here's what that code looked like

Jo here's what that code looked like
<img src="2xnet.jpg" width="201" height="75" alt="flash2x banner" title="flash2x banner" border="0" align="" />

Also keep the alt tag there because it helps some with SEO. It helps the spiders when they crawl your site. Identify images.
