.htaccess issues

I'm still unable to get this program to work and protect the pages I need protected. Spent quite a bit of time with my hosting company and they concluded that .htaccess files were the problem and I would have to fix myself.

I'm a novice when it comes to Web design/files.

I currently have a members only portion of my site. There's a subfolder within the main and everytime the the link to the file in the protected folder was selected, an internal error message 500 and 404 occurs. Again the hosting company says not there problem.

Can anybody offer some clear instruction on how to fix all of this and how to get this to work?

Otherwise, I've just wasted 40 bucks.

Where should the htaccess files be? Should they be in main folder or subfolder?

The software automatically uploads the htaccess files to the correct folders for you. What I would suggest is opening a support ticket with us and send us your .hdb file, we'll be able to take a closer look at the issue at hand. You will have to turn on hidden files and folders in order to access this file.

Here's how:

Windows XP
Open your My Computer folder. Select Tools > Folder Options > View tab. Scroll down and select Show Hidden Files and Folders. It's also a good idea to uncheck Hide Extensions for Known File Types.

Windows 7/Vista
Open your My Computer folder. Select Organize > Folder and Search Options > View tab. Scroll down and select Show Hidden Files and Folders. It's also a good idea to uncheck Hide Extensions for Known File Types.

Once you have turned on hidden files, you'll find the .hdb file at the following file path:

Vista:
C:\Users[username]\AppData\Roaming\CoffeeCup Software\CoffeeCup
Website Access Manager\Databases

XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User-Account]\Application Data\CoffeeCup
Software\CoffeeCup Website Access Manager\Databases\

Once we have this file, we'll run a few tests and try to figure out what might be causing the problem. After we have finished testing, we recommend you change your password for security purposes.
