BTW, found this info about my tv tuner:

Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1800 (Model 78xxx, Combo ATSC/QAM)

Computer is over a yr old so that's ancient in tech terms.

Hope I can find the right software :)

I would go to http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support.html directly and get the files.

I went there, think I found the right one and it states:

A valid WinTV application CD-ROM will be needed to install this WinTV v7 version. Any WinTV v6 or WinTV 7 application CD can be used during the install.

Should I have received that cd when I got my computer? Oh lord...if so, I have no idea where it is lol!

You can probably call them and say you lost the CD. They should be able to help you out.

Nothing ever is that easy. Just think of your monitor as the TV and the DVR as your cable box. You have to connect the cable box to a television and use the correct cables. Once you do that, you just need software to emulate the TV.
