Hi Levi & thanks :)

Directv offers a free software prog that allows you to watch recorded shows from a DVR on a pc - but there has to be an internet connection to the DVR - and I don't have that. BUT that software does NOT allow you to watch live tv. That seems to be the prob I'm having - just can't seem to figure out a way to watch live tv and record it on my pc. Yeah, I could call tech support - but ugh! LOL! It always seems like a waste of time.

I guess ultimately it's no big deal. I don't really NEED to watch & record live tv on my computer - it's just something I am kind of determined to figure out :)

I'll keep tinkering around...

Will let you connect a device with a RJ-45 ethernet port to a wireless network.

I'm sure their are other cheaper bridges out there as well.

Thanks again Levi, but I'm not real sure what that thing is all about - lol!

I think I either need to get the DVR connected to the internet or just forget the whole thing! :)

Thanks again everyone!

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with TiVo. I have been a life-time subscriber for over 10 years and it is hands down the best DVR I have ever used.

Scott - yeah we used to have Tivo's but we recently did a kind of upgrade thru the whole house so all our dvr's are hd and they are all Directv's dvrs.

Unless something has drastically changed (and DirecTv is not really known for positive drastics :D) the RJ45 on the back of your DVR is... USELESS. As of 2 years ago, they were "planning" on activating it, but not for typical networking.

I can't tell from the picture if one or some of those inputs are coaxial, but it seems from the manuals that you should be able to use the included tv tuner card to at least pick up some digital channels in the air if you can't find a way to get wired from the DVR.
Manual - http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01671449.pdf
You'd most likely need an antenna as my tuner picks up pretty much nothing without one though.
If it had to be shows/channels from the DVR, I've seen wireless transmitter/receiver devices to let you watch shows in other rooms, but the one I saw in particular didn't handle HD (just composite red/yellow/white cables). Something like this:

Although I'd prefer to be able to test out something like this before shelling out the dough, or be bought from a local store to return without shipping hassles if it doesn't do the trick.

The only HD/digital tuner I have is a cheap USB stick that only has a coax connection for over-the-air channels, but it picks up some basic HD channels rather well. Similar to this, but a cheaper Kworld brand/model:

I'm sure there's a solution out there, but if you have some rabbit ears buried somewhere, I'd first see if you can make use of that internal tv tuner before spending any money on the idea.

Thank you all so much for the input! :)

I've decided to just buy yet another flatscreen tv and hd dvr from DirecTV and put it here in my office. Then I'll just connect the DVR to my computer if I want to save any shows on my computer - which I probably won't LOL!

Thanks again - luv y'all!

That's one way to solve it. :P Well at least now you can surf these forums while watching TV without dealing with picture-in-picture.

Okay I'm stumped again.

I still have not purchased a new tv for my office here. BUT we have a tv and an HD DVR in our bonus room upstairs. So I wanted to do a "test". I recorded 5 min of some random show, unplugged the DVR and now the DVR is setting here on my computer desk.

How the heck do I connect it to my computer where my computer will detect it so I can see if I can transfer the recorded show to my computer?

It seems so simple. But I can't figure it out! I am going nuts here people. I called Directv tech support but was on hold for almost 10 min and gave up.

The back of the DVR has an ethernet port, HDMI port, the usual coaxial looking round spiral thingies. Do I need some kind of software on my computer that will detect my DVR?

I'm so confused. And getting frustrated.

Why do I want to do this you ask? WELL, a friend is going to be on a show on March 31 and he has no clue how to get it on his computer so I offered my services. LOL! I will hook my DVR back up in the bonus room to record the show, then bring it back to my office, IF I can figure out how to directly transfer a show from the DVR to my pc.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for any help!

Luv y'all! :D
