Like anything with computers, take this info with a grain of salt.... these are average numbers on average testings, your specific results will vary slightly depending on what you are using the computer for, graphically intensive work or game-play etc.

According to the chart thought the i7-920 does have more impressive results, but taken in context, the computer you purchase will most likely have more raw computing power than most 3rd world nations and the space shuttle..... combined :)

I see you commented on the pc I found at Samsclub.com, but not the one at the HP site.

512MB NVIDIA GeForce G210 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]

This is dedicated memory.

1TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive

7200 is fast, of course most desktops have these by now. The fastest hard drive on the market right now is 10,000-RPM, but you REALLY don't need that for what you're gonna be doing on it

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q8400 [2.66GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]

A 4mb L2 cache is even more than I have on MY computer!

Integrated 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet, No wireless LAN

Gigabit support, great for networking! You're gonna hafta buy a wireless card if you want to network wirelessly though.

This HP is quite a machine. Now wasn't there something else? ...oh ya.

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q8400 [2.66GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]

or

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)

That would be the Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q8400 [2.66GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]

Any other questions?

Ok, you guys KICK A$$!

So I think I've decided on:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp … mailconfig

It's the HP w/the Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q8400 [2.66GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB], dedicated memory for the graphics card, & 8GB DDR3. Price seems pretty good to me!

Chad,

Since the HP pc I'm planning on buying doesn't have a wireless thing built in, can I just use the wired/wireless router I am using now? It's a Linksys WRT150 N Wireless-N and I use the wireless part of it for my laptop sometimes - I have the Wireless-N adapter card thing plugged into my laptop. So will this work? :)

THANKS AGAIN!

You can definitely use the same router, but in most cases you can't put a notebook wifi card into a desktop computer (unless it's usb obviously). So you'll need to go out and buy a wireless card for that computer. Ask HP to throw one into the deal, that way you know you're getting one that's compatible. They are pretty universal for desktops though.

Well it seems we have solved the problem of helping you find a new computer, however in doing so we have created another problem: your computer is going to be faster than mine, and I can't have that. So I've started shopping around for a new computer for myself, anyone on here have any suggestions for me on what I should buy? I only have one criteria for my new computer: It has to be faster than Amelia's :P

Amelia;

Is your new computer and the wireless router in different locations? You should be able to plug the new computer directly into the router if they are together.

Chad! You are too funny!

Looks like my Dad's discount will save us about $200. So I've come up w/this:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp … mailconfig

So the price is more like $1,300.00! That is an awesome deal! And don't forget, that includes:

HP 2709m 27-inch Diagonal 16:9 Full HD Widescreen Monitor

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q9550 [2.83GHz, 12MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]

1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]

Yes I decided I wanted an even faster processor and more powerful graphics card:) The 2.83 was the fastest one to choose from. I figured w/the discount my Dad is getting, we could add a monitor, better graphics card & faster processor:) hehehehhe I'm soooooo freaking excited!!!!!!! I'll let ya know when we make an actual FINAL decision, since I'm sure you all are dying to know:) LOL!

David,

My new pc will be in the same room & on the same desk as the router. The router we have is both a wired & wireless. Sometimes I use my laptop w/the ethernet cord plugged in & sometimes I use it as a wireless. It's a relatively new router. If it doesn't work for some reason, we'll just buy a new one - they can't be expensive.

Ok everyone, stay calm.

I've got the news you've all been waiting for.

Make sure you are sitting down.

Take a deep breath.

I've officially placed the order for my new pc!!!

I AM SUCH A DORK!

:)

I ended up ordering this:

HP Pavilion p6180t PC
• Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
• Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q9550 [2.83GHz, 12MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]
• SAVE $30! 8GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
• 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
• 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]
• LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
• Integrated 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet, No wireless LAN
• 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, audio
• TV tuner, dual format ATSC-NTSC with PVR, remote
• Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
• 20% OFF! HP 2.1 30W stereo speakers with subwoofer and remote control
• HP multimedia keyboard and HP premium laser mouse
• Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
• No additional security software
• HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

and

HP 2709m 27" Diagonal 16:9 Full HD Widescreen Monitor (couldn't beat the price)

and I also bought a headset - I don't have one! There were only a couple of choices, so I got what HP labeled as "Premium Digital Headset". I read the reviews & some were not so good. People complained about the weight, the heat, and some plastic parts that broke. But they were cheap and I won't be using them very often at all. I just thought I'd add them to the order because of my Dad's discount :)

Well, there you have it. I'm soooooooo excited! Everything should arrive in less than 3 weeks - I hope!

Thanks again everyone for all the help/info/advice!

In the time waiting you might want to look at, and download AVG Free Antiviris

Free Open Office

Spybot Search and Destroy

Open Office is AWESOME! But I don't use free virus, I use Spyware Doctor w/ antivirus because its so fricken easy to use:

http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor-antivirus/

Plus when you buy it you're allowed to put it on three different computers for the price of one!

I'd give you the link for CC Cleaner but you already have that.

Btw, I have a feeling that since you got a 64 bit system we're going to end up starting a 64 bit thread on here to help you select and install software for it :P
