new Direct ftp 6.5 problems...

direct ftp 6.2 works fine on my xp desktop and my vista laptop.
I downloaded the beta and it had problems (going to the wrong site) i reported it to coffeecup and was given a ticket number and told "others were having the same problem". I got an email from 'customer care' requesting more info; i gave them all i had.
Two week later i reported the problem again and was told 'the programmers are working on it'.
Today i get an email that the 'new direct ftp 6.5 is available for use'.
I download my upgrade (foolishly expecting iit to have been fixed) and i am still getting the same result.
I purchase the whole coffeecup package a while ago and am happy with what i bought but this direct ftp upgrade is a problem.

My question: Is ANYONE else having problems logging into their website with the new version?
there dont seem to be too many options for directing the program to the site. To reiterate; the older version worked fine!

Bob,

You may have already tried this, but if you have all the log-in information at hand, try removing one of the entries that is giving you a problem. Close the program, and reboot your computer.

Now reopen Direct FTP, and enter the server information. Maybe it will keep the correct information after this.

I DO NOT LIKE v6.5. Regarding the login error that I and other users have encountered, the 6.5 PDF documentation suggest removing any path to a directory on the server. After doing so, FTP did connect, but it pointed to my /user/home/ directory on the server (FreeBSD) and I cannot navigate to other directories above my home directory on the server. This is a real problem because I run several virtual hosts with Apache, and these websites are in unique directories under /usr/www/vhosts/whatever.com, .org, etc.

Cosmetically, the 6.5 version uses large iconic buttons on the left of the file editor window, and the size of the window cannot be resized smaller than the space required to display the three icons arranged stacked on top of each other.

Version 6.2 utilizes top folder tabs in the Edit View window to select between File Editor and info. If the info tab is selected, then bottom tabs for FTP Activity Log, Session History, and Bookmark Editor are revealed. The advantage of this layout is that you can open an edit window that will only display a single line of (for example) html code if you so desire.

Regarding the v6.5, I'm not sure where or how the activity log and session history are revealed. There is some comment in the PDF help info. to hold down the (as I recall) shift key while v6.5 FTP is loading. What's with this? This is too esoteric! When I tried the shift-key/load thing, the v6.5 program started, and died. Now, when I try to restart-normal the v6.5 program . . .it immediately dies.

Another issue regarding v6.5 is the absence of a Stay Connected option. I've noticed that in other CoffeeCup aps. that embedded FTP clients are good for a one-shot only attempt. I'm assuming that the embedded client 1) connects, 2) uploads or downloads the request, and 3) disconnects after the immediate request is complete; therefore, a stay connected feature is moot.

Well, I may want the FTP client as per v6.2 to stay connected for hours.

I suspect that the new 6.5 version of FTP Direct was improved by someone who typically uploads everything into one "folder", i.e., directory on a third-party, ISP hosted site that utilized few if any subfolders. This improved v6.5 also does not provide for moving up the food chain, i.e., into parent directories above your default user's home directory. Bad news if you're a root or superuser, and need to move around all over the map.

I'm very disappointed with v6.5 FTP PRO. I've uninstalled it. It is a step backward from the professional tool that it once was. :(

Have to agree with you ... I've had repeated crashes with this version.

In defense of CoffeeCup support, they were very gracious and quickly eMailed a replacement version of v6.2. It was a very easy re-install and I'm very happy with it.

Well . . .I've finally had to move away from my old dependable version v6.2. I've upgraded my Unix servers to FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE, and have started using SFTP over SSH. Oddly, v6.2 would connect and permit downloads, but choked on uploads???

I still had my download of CoffeeFTP6.5.5R.exe (March 2009) . . .so I decided to reinstall it. It had some odd problems (using SFTP over SSH), for example, I could not create directories on the server, and could only upload files to a preexisting directory created manually using a command line on the server. Additionally, if a sub-directory was included with a list of files to be uploaded, then it would choke.

Finally, I thought to download a current version Direct-FTP-Full-6.9.2015.exe, installed it and works as advertised. Apparently the problems that we've (others) have voiced have been fixed. And I will add that CoffeeCup is to be commended for continuing their online repository of customer's purchases and allowing free upgrades of the same products. Thanks CoffeeCup!

Always best to keep checking and make sure you're running the latest versions! Glad it all worked out for you and thanks for posting back and letting everyone know. I'm sure there are still a few that need to upgrade ... :P
