Mediasmart Servers

Anyone here have a HP Mediasmart Server or running Windows Home Server? I have the HP and would like access to the external web pages for editing. It would be great to be able to add a IP security camera page, without flash, so I can monitor the home while on vacation, etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Tom's right most network security camera's already have remote access capability that works really well right out of the box (especially useful if your ISP doesn't provide you with a static IP address).

You might want to check out Microsoft's Web Server 2008 R2 MSRP $469 instead of Home Server. I think it is more along the lines of what you are looking for.

The good news is that you can try either for 30 days:
Microsoft Web Server 2008 R2 download: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/trial-software.aspx
Microsoft Home Server 2008 download: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/eval.mspx

Check with your ISP and make sure that you have a static IP address. Dynamic IP's are a real headache for this type of scenario.

That's not what I am talking about though. HP Mediasmart system is a software/hardware combination. The OS is based on MS Server 2003 and is Windows Homer Server. This system has remote access through port 80 (HTTP) for streaming, etc. What I am wanting is to be able to add to the web hosting of this Home Server, allowing the addition of a page with IP camera video for remote monitoring. Static or Dynamic IP is not really relevant with IP tracking via DynDNS and others although I do have a static IP address.

You are right about these IP cameras having their own capabilities. I am wanting to combine different video output from several types/brands of cameras on one page that is linked to/from the MediaSmart Servers web hosting page. Different types and brands needed are because of different locations and their associated requirements.

I hope this makes sense.

I think I get what your going for. I know Home Server has a easy to use lite-flavor of RDP and file/print server capabilities, I just don't recall it having true IIS support. Which is why I thought of Web Server which supports natively IIS for serving webpages and sites over port 80 but not many of the other features in full blown Windows Server 2008 R2.

I have Windows Home Server running on a computer I put together, but I have zero experience with trying to get any cameras running with it. There is an IIS Manager in WHS, although I don't know if or how much it is crippled compared to typical Windows Server editions.

If you haven't already, check out this plugin for WHS called Whiist.

"Whiist is a Windows Home Server Add-In that allows you to create and manage web content on your Windows Home Server." I haven't used it much, but it might be very helpful if you create additional sites/pages.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
