Good Anti Virus [Free]
Hey guys, does anyone know of a free anti virus that will protect my computer? I'm using AVG right now and it installed something into my browser without giving me an option to deny it. I don't like that stuff, so i'm on the look for a new one.. I have a licensed Norton account but removed it due to hogging memory. Sorry Norton! Sorry AVG! I must move on!
It's just a browser safety setup, you can disable it in your browser without any issues.
I don't use AVG anymore, I use the built in Windows Defender program (Security Essentials if you're on Windows 7 and earlier), I have a lifetime paid subscription to Malwarebytes which cost me $25.00 with a special a long time ago, and I use Ccleaner every few days to keep my cache and cookies cleaned out. Works for me and very minimal cost. I think the Malwarebytes might be something like $99.00 now for the lifetime one, but it's probably the best program out there for cleaning your pc if something gets on it. The subscription is a real time protection too so ... Hope that helps.

I use the same 3 programs as Jo Ann.
If you use Windows, Security Essentials works well and it's light on resources. I've been using it for a few years.
I use the free version of Malwarebytes, and run it before doing monthly back-ups.
I think I've been using C-Cleaner for about 10 years now, it's an excellent utility.
Both Malwarebytes and C-Cleaner can be had for free...
BUT
You have to pay attention when you install them.
Both are distributed by websites like Cnet

WARNING:
CNET will give you a TOOLBAR, and maybe some other junk, by default.
Make sure you UNCHECK any optional software when you download "free" programs.

Hrmm, I have to look into this, i'm on Windows 7 64-bit however I can't seem to initiate the Windows Defender. Everytime I restart without an anti virus it prompts me saying I have to install one, but I will use built in Windows Defender if I can find out how to start it up. Thanks guys, I appreciate the help

Type windows defender in your Windows search box.

I can't hear what I'm looking at.

You can also go the way you always get to most things about Windows, in the Control Panel.
