V4 question

Hello all,
I have a question - probably considered a dumb one  - if one has a site made with 3.5 with 70 pages and would consider updating to V4 from what I heard it is "backwards compatible" so does that mean I can OPEN a 3.5 site in 4.0 and all will work okay? Then if I want I can just reopen the project in 3.5 also with no problems? Just like using 2.5 and older 1.5. Now is V4 a different framework than 3.5 and if one was to update the 3.5 to V4 ALL pages would have to be re-uploaded since different program???
I can see starting a NEW project in V4 but not sure about converting 3.5 to 4.0, took so long to change from 2.5 to 3.5 had to actually start from scratch and hope to avoid that again!
Thanks,
Ray

There is no problem with forwards compatability. You can open your 3.5 project in 4.0, but if you save it, you won't be able to go back to 3.5.
So if you want to upgrade to SD4, you don't have to do another conversion, there won't be any disruptions. Nothing to fear. :)

Thanks Inger - But as long as I have copies of same project I can open back in 3.5 if I need to?

The other concern is : If I convert the project to V4 and only upload new pages made is the CSS that is still on server going to be different then the V4 CSS as is different framework??? I had that problem when updating 2.5 to 3.0 what ever page was not updated CSS was different as you can only upload one - I hope I explained it right and am not confusing you to much?

If you save a copy of your 3.5 project, you will of course be able to open it in 3.5. The 'change' only takes place when a 3.5 project is saved in 4.0.

I'm not able to answer your other question. I would think it would be the same css, but that I don't know without trying. As far as I can tell, the difference lies in the .rsd file itself, not in the exported project.

Thanks Inger that's what I thought.

As far as this will wait and see if anyone actually does this. Don't want to take any chances messing up.

Once again Thank You Inger! Hope all is well and you are doing okay.

Ray, when you were doing the conversion or your site from 2.5 to 3.5, didn't you operate with a test site, where you uploaded your new pages as soon as they had been created? How were you handling the existing, non converted pages? Did you link to them from the test site to the real site, or did you move the 'old' pages to the test site and just changed them out as you had the new pages done?

If the first, they would have had their own, separate old and new css files. But if the latter, the old pages would not have worked with the new set of css because the old pages had the rows and columns, whereas the new pages had containers, as far as I understand.

Anyway, there is no such difference now.

Before opening the site in v4, make a copy of our 3.5 version and save it. You can always go back to the previous version if you have to.

Did you know that Web Form Builder can be used for both simple and complicated forms and that it's not limited to the default fonts and buttons? Take a look at a form we developed for WindowTinting.com.

Yes it was the latter so that's why my CSS files were different BUT glad to hear no such difference now 3.5 to 4.0
Thank you again Inger sorry to bother you.

Thanks Brian, yes I learned this the hard way using 1.5 then 2.5 and 3.5 and actually update every few minutes and do save all backups on stick and external drive. Doing that has helped me many times.
Take care and thanks.
