Adding a blog to website hosted on an...

Hi guys,
This is a little off topic, but I'm not sure how to go about this and thought I'd ask. I've got my website up and running for the most part. It just needs a few tweaks. I designed it with RSD and it is hosted on inmotion hosting. A hosting site we have had for years.
Anyway we are wanting to add a blog to our website. We want to be able to post in the blog and have it instantly show up on our website without the bother of publishing through FTP.
I'm looking at wordpress and others like it. My question is are there other, maybe better options out there? If I do go with wordpress, what is the best way to integrate it into the existing site? Can it be embedded like a slideshow or does it need to run along side as an additional page?

I looked into this months ago and thought it was simple matter but looking at it again, I'm totally confused.

Thanks for any help,

Linda

Short of explaining how it's done completely (which I think is in the articles on CC's site already), let me also add in that you can use your free S-Drive account to accomplish this as well. You are able to create a blog site on there and then use the code it gives you to embed it on your site. For more information check out your S-Drive and there should be some explanations there. Do a search for S-Drive Blog or something and you'll probably find some good articles here on CC that tell how to use this.

Once you have this embedded on your site, you can go about adding to it using a couple methods. You can do so right on the S-Drive and create a new article right there (the least problem way), or you can actually email a blog post to your blog and it will post (some issues can arise if you happen to edit the theme in any way as some settings will not stay put on S-Drive and some are not alterable at all).

It's quite useable and without being a whole lot of work involved as well. The setup takes a little bit of time, but it's a pretty sound system if you don't mind using the default themes that are included in the setup. Be sure to not choose a Full Page theme or it won't embed correctly.

Other than that you can do a wordpress blog and you can embed it, but it takes a bit more work than this would I think. I would try the S-Drive option first and see if that works for you.

P.S. If you already have your S-Drive free site used for something else like Forms, you may need to upgrade to a paid account, then I guess I'd suggest going the Wordpress way since that is free as well.

Hope that helps and good luck with it.

Thanks Jo,
I knew the S-Drive was there but I didn't know if it could be used if I wasn't hosted with CC. Or what it was used for, for that matter. I'll have to check it out, it sounds easier than going the wordpress route.

I have a few other questions but I'll save them until after I check out the S-Drive. Since my website theme is way basic I may not have any problems.

Thanks again,

Linda

I'm back, I'm not sure this is the forum I want or if I need to go to another one. I've just received the renewal notice for ImMotion where we host our website. Since I'm going though the whole upgrade process I thought I'd check into just moving the whole website over here to the CC S-Drive and be done. This could take care of some of the issues I have with the blog and other things.
I do have a few questions though. If there are tutorials or explanations please direct me to them. How difficult is it to transfer my current domain name to the CC S-drive? If I transfer the website and set up my blog, will I need to set up two separate web addresses for the blog and the website? I think I do, but am not sure. If so, I'm thinking that the Webbie plan may be enough to start out with, if needed later I can upgrade, correct?

Thanks for any help,
Linda

Hi Linda, I have the Webbie plan. I have my blog on the streams section of the S-drive. I made it with Disqus and link to it from the site. All that just takes up one site of the 3 allowed in the account. Recently I tried making the blog responsive, you have to go to the Disqus theme and customize it in the hardcore mode. You have to manually change some of the html code so that it is responsive. It works well for me on the first pg. of the 3 choices of blogs but when I select one of them then some of the text gets cut off. I have lots of work to do on the RSD remake of the site so I have put off working on the blog for now.
I was with netfirms for 6 years and then moved to CC S-drive a few years ago. The move was easy. CC has been more reliable in up time, they have been more helpful in service, They have been priced less because the same price for one site with netfirms here you get 3 sites so I guess that it is one third the price of the netfirms. Solid state drive servers are faster and more desirable. CC software is designed for the S-drive.
I hope that this info has helped.

Linda, just be aware, you can't have any 'outside' PHP on an SDrive site. CC programs that use PHP (like Formbuilder) are OK, but you can't run non-CC PHP scripts.

If the site doesn't rely on PHP, then SDrive is a really easy to use option.
With the Webbie plan, you get space for 3 sites, and 3 forms. Put your Stream on one and site on another and you'll have one left over to experiment on. ;)

CC hasn't made their Stream templates responsive - yet, but you can tweak the code to make it responsive.

Paintbrush,
Thanks for the heads up. Since the site was totally designed in CC's RSD and nothing has been added to it I'm assuming that there is nothing adverse to worry about. That is why I wanted to check into this before adding a blog on anything else.
