Those urls are definitely SEO friendly. May not always look pretty, but search engines can definitely follow them. So there really is no need to fix something that is not broke ;)

There are no real immediate plans to modify how those urls work or offer a feature to change them.

Someday, who knows...

They are not SEO if you want your product to show up when someone is searching for a particular item. I never have known anyone to search in google for "viewitem.php/productid=8". They will seach for something like "hot sauce" and I do not beleive "viewitem.php/productid=8" will not show up in the search results and my "hot sauce" in my CC store will not be found so I will not make a sale. I use allot of CC products and I love them all!!!, but I am realy concerned about the non SEO freindliness of SCC.:/

If the word "hot sauce" is in your text for that product, it will still be indexed. Google does not index on the url alone. They actually base more of their search on content then domains.

Does that include no chance of a change in the pro version also? I still beleive this is a great disadvantage to SCC. I have worked very hard to get my items in my current store to show up on the first page or two of a google search based on a brand or item name in the url. Please consider a re thinking of this for SCC.:/

Right now that sort of feature is not really even on the horizon for the software. Someday, maybe, but not until we address more pressing issues like inventory, downloadable merchandise, logging, additional merchants etc..

Scott,

I cannot seem to get any of my SCC stores to show up in google searches. Several have been out on the web since SCC first came out. It doesn't seem to matter how much content is in the store. I have even done a cut and paste into google search, phrases and words right out of these stores. On the other hand my original store (not CC) shows up whenever I do a google search on any name brand or most items I carry and the only difference I can see is the name of products and their catagory show up in the url. I really cannot believe CC is not taking serious the need to make SCC SEO friendly. I am giving SCC a go and I will do my best to get it to work for me but if I cannot be found thru a simple search on google my products will certainly not be sold.

What you are looking for is just beyond the current capabilities of the software and really should be handled more by the Web Server then Shopping Cart Creator.

Someday maybe we will look into it, but it is very far down on the priority list.

Search engines keep the exact processes a closely guarded secret and despite a plethora of seo advice and articles on the net, I don't think anyone out there can definitively state what is going to ensure placements within search engine results.

Most cart software doesn't actually put the product in the url. Looking at two of the biggest players out there Cubecart and Zen-Cart they both use conventions similar to SCC but the sites created with them still get picked up on Google and other search engines. The huge pool of developers working on those two projects would have soon rectified any seo problems and quickly created modules to rectify the url's if it was likely to affect a site's visibility.

The more I thought about this thread, the more it worried me.

I had visions of spending hours stocking up the shop, refining the sites appearance, tweaking content, etc, then finding out Google and other search engines would be unable to find it, due to some unknown peculiarity in SCC.

To establish that the SCC powered sites could actually be found on the net, I simply went to the section of the forum where people had posted up their sites made with SCC and looked through the shops. I picked out the shops that were complete new ventures, but which have now been up for a couple of months to allow them to get indexed. Taking elements from these sites, I simply pasted these into Google search and the site was listed amongst the return results. Conclusive proof that Google and others can actually pick up these SCC powered shops.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
