You should be able to alter the theme you used so you won't need to redo stuff after each update of your shop.

I tried to modify it using SCDP and that got me no where

Tim suggested finding the categories url link and pointing it to a new page with a thumbnail for each category , and then setting re directs from those, at which point we gave up
