You can sell as many items as you choose.

It really doesn't matter much if the store is in a subdomain or subdirectory. It's personal preference. Some people think it's better for seo to use subdomains. Search engines look at the IP address of the hosted domain so I don't place much value in gaining any seo advantage in using them.
