How do you showing gross prices? -...

Is it possible to show gross prices?

Currently, if taxes have been specified, prices are shown net of tax until you reach the shopping cart. I would prefer for my customers to see the gross price.

I realise you can set gross prices and leave out applying taxes altogether but I still want to be able to show the tax amount at the payment stage.

Thank you.

Hi Riz,

I think that you and I are looking for the same thing: http://www.coffeecup.com/forums/shopping-cart-pro/retail-price-inclusive-of-vat/.

Let's hope for some suggestions.
It's a kind of magic!

Unless you are dealing with VAT system, (in other words, if you are in the US and dealing with US currencies) what would you want to do that for? I don't know very many sites that show you the full price with tax until you get to the cart itself, maybe a few sites but not enough to make a difference for sure. Just curious as to what the reason would be to do this?

Hi all,

As Orville said...I'm based in the UK and VAT is relevant.

I've personally never been fond of the US style of taking your goods to the till and then having sales tax added (as is my experience in New Jersey - I assume it's the same way in all states).

I'm not sure if it's UK law (Magic's post says it's the law in Denmark) but UK shoppers are used to seeing the price including VAT.

Right now it seems that all you can do is just include the gross price and make a note on the product page (and shopping cart page) that VAT is 17.5% and is included in the price. Should you require a VAT invoice, please contact us.

I've noticed that some small e-commerce sites in the UK do this and I now guess it's because the software they used to make their site has the same issue.

Just for those outside of the UK here are the actual UK rules

RETAIL prices legally must be displayed including VAT, More to the point you are NOT allowed to add vat at checkout

TRADE prices are a different ball game altogether, invoices ON PAPER ANYWAY have to be displayed as NET price + VAT = GROSS PRICE

So does that mean most UK owners of SCC Pro are not VAT registered - or else surely there'd have been more of a fuss on this issue?

I'm going to show all my prices gross and inform customers that the price includes VAT.

I used to be VAT registered and I had a retail shop, but I also manufactured goods which i sold to trade
Hence i needed to know the rules.
Now having semi-retired i am no longer VAT registered
So my SCC pro site has prices including vat displayed, though i am not VAT registered, it just shows a VAT amount included of 0
If a retailer inadvertently purchases goods off me and claims back VAT the tax man will query it with him NOT ME as i have not charged them Vat
From a retail customers perspective, they don't give a dam they are just saving 17.5% without realising its because i am not VAT registered
If anyone wants to be pedantic about it, I have actually included the VAT i paid on the bullion i made the jewellery from, and theoretically trade could claim it back, BUT I CAN'T

Hi Riz, I'm Canadian based, with different tax situation and laws. At checkout, we've always used a notification which generally explains the breakdown of the taxes, similar to what you've described.

But, we always enclose an invoice bearing a proper tally of price/shipping/tax in each shipment and attach our copy to a printout of the paypal payment for tax reporting purposes. We were audited fairly early on, and the feds were happy with that.

We enclose invoices in international shipments as well, even though there are no taxes involved. Proper documentation avoids hangups with customs.

HMRC will have a general enquiries line you could ring to confirm what they would consider necessary...... if you don't mind waiting on hold for a bit. :o

Thanks for the info guys...

My client is only selling in the UK so I don't think there'll be any issues with just showing gross price with a reference to VAT being included.

All customers can request VAT invoices if they need it (I've done this on numerous occasions buying from small UK online retailers). My client may even decide to include VAT invoices when sending out the orders.

That said, I think future versions of SCC should give us the option to show gross prices (I'll add it to my list of suggestions that I'll eventually post in the relevant section on this forum).

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
