Retina images in iPhone emails

I'm only new to RED, but so far I have able to achieve everything I wanted to do - with the exception of using 'retina' images in my emails. I have to include a couple of logos that are quite detailed, and they look pretty bad on iPhones when using 'non-retina' images (i.e. x2 size).

Is it possible to include retina images in my emails using RED?

Any help would be appreciated.

That's great to hear Matthew :)

Yes you can do that, just use 'double size' images. However, email clients are not as advanced as browsers and can not select between image variations — in short the exact same (retina) image will be delivered to all clients.

Thanks Bob.

So to clarify, I should use images that are double sized, but specify their 'width' as '50% of their actual size in the 'Dimensions' attributes of RED?

Yes, double-sized but then constraining them to the size used in the email. If I remember correctly using either a max-width or constraining their width using a container or column works better than using a percentage.

If you are subscribed to our newsletter you can see that the logo image is about 2x the size of the actual size it is displayed at in the email. We use a max-width for that.

Hope it works!

Thanks Bob - yes it works perfectly. I just set the maximum pixel width to half of the actual .jpg image size and it looks fabulous on iPhone. I have been looking for a way to send beautifully formatted emails for a long time, and it looks like RED does everything I want.

Much appreciated...

Matthew
