For freebies, you can take a look at GIMP and Inkscape.

Hi there Tariq Ebrahim,

Here's your software!

The best graphic software on earth is Xara Xtreme Pro - It'll run rings around Adobe's Illustrator.'
In fact those british guys are building upon the software so that anything you make in the program can be exported as a website.

Indeed a well-thought over and fastastic program. Intuitive, you don't even have to open the manual.

You can take a look at it here:

If you can find a copy of Paint Shop Pro 9 on eBay I highly recommend it. It had some CMYK issues but for web stuff it's right up there with Photoshop in power and you can even use a lot of Photoshop plug-ins with it. I can't speak to version 10 and beyond, after Corel got hold of it.

I'm gonna go along with finn on this one, Xara's images aren't as large as Photoshp's

Bruzer, do you use Xara, then? If so, I have a question...

With Illustrator I could take in a scanned image, automatically trace outlines from that image, and save those outlines as an *.ai file that one of my 3D modeling programs could then import as Bezier curves for building NURBS objects. That enabled me to do jobs like this:

Alas, my Illustrator license was temporary, for a specific job, and I'm unwilling to spend the $$ to buy my own license. The price for Xara basic looks reasonable (69 Pounds), so I might be interested if it can handle this kind of job. Any insights?

Dang, that's nice work! I'm sure most users wouldn't even think of taking those steps.

Thanks. 3D is what I do. The actual modeling software was Rhino 3D

And the rendering engine was Flamingo

Those apps I do own, but as I said I'm in the market for a new way to trace images to generate the curves to replace Illustrator.
