Sitepoint is about to run an online course in PHP so that might be worth investigating.

I signed up for it and did the first two lessons and lost the plot (I think mostly because they put too much into lesson 3 or was it 2) ...but I will get back to it when I have more time. Its on my list of things to do before I die....

I have just signed up for the Sitepoint PHP and CSS courses which clash with when I will be away but all the material will be there for me to tackle when I'm ready...so I'm forever hopeful that I'll get them done

If only the mere act of buying the book or signing up for the course would lead to an osmotic learning effect....

The php course sounds like it might be a good one but, then, any course sounds like a good one for me because I'm so blasted inexperienced. I feel like I've bitten off way more than I can chew. This isn't the first time, though. The older I get (and 64 is old enough to know better), it seems the dummer I get!

I'm going to start this afternoon when I get home. We'll see what I end up with and I think I'll sign up for the course at Sitepoint. No matter the outcome, I always learn something.

I think you'd be well advised to at least start out with Fe Pixie's tutorials. They have been used - and recommended - by many, and even I understand some of them!

I've also decided to get a membership with Sitepoint.com. Have any of you used the books? I downloaded the sample chapters of the php one.

I'm also actually going to start out by designing a site for my husband. He's a hotshot (at least in my opinion) clinical psychologist and needs a website. I'll do his with html/xhtml and css to learn that and I'll also be learning the php/mySQL on the NFP website. I think I can do that. Using two different sites will kind of "compatmentalize" the learning. My html is very rusty.

I get bored in retirement and need to squeeze my brain a bit. This should do it for sure.

I'm off to Fe Pixie's tutorials. (Sheesh! I sound like something from Dragon Age!)

I have a bookshelf full of Sitepoint books and I even open them occasionally when I need to work something out.

They are really good reference books and reasonably easy to follow.

I do have quite a few on my "before I die" list though, but also hoping that the knowledge will just seep out of the books and flow down to me sitting behind the computer ...I am forever hopeful!
