HTML Editor 7, files not being saved?...

Hi there, When I create a new HTML page or add anything to my site-in-progress and SAVE it... I can access it from within my Editor... it shows up in the WORKING folder from within the Editor itself... but when I go to My Programs/CoffeeCup Software/Working/My Website, the new files are not there at all, just the old ones that were there before I installed Version 7.

When I was working with Editor 6 many moons ago, the newly created and saved files would always show up in My Programs/CoffeeCup Software/Working/My Website... but now they don't show up when I go that way. But since I got the new Editor, they ONLY show up from within the Editor itself. I no longer see the new files added to the folder from My Programs. All the old files are there, but never the new ones.

I'm panicking on accounta I am used to being able to go that way and see them... and also I upload files from my website host via my browser, and doing it that way it can't see the new files either.

What happened? Help? LOL :)
Thanks much, PS_LOVE Coffee Cup!
PSS... Have a new Dell PC with Vista, made it appear like XP, no problems with any of it, its great :)

Hi,
Have you checked under Tools - Preferences - Directories that the box 'When saving pages, prompt me if the page is not in my working directory' is checked?

BTW, shortly there will be a new update ready, the html Editor 2008.
Ha en riktig god dag!

Hi Secret Hiker.

My first question in reading your post was going to be "are you using Vista". You have answered that already. I am going to do my best to explain what has happened.
The last time you updated your html editor, I'd bet you did not uninstall the html editor, re-boot and then install it to your computer. Just installing overtop of the editor causes Windows Vista to believe it is a "Legacy program", meaning an older program that was not made to work with Vista, even if it was made to work with Vista. The problem you have is that you can't see the files you saved by any other means than using the program that created the file.....html editor. I be even Windows Explorer won't show your new files.
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder that should have your files.
Look at the toolbars accross the top of the program. You should have choices like "organize" "views" "burn" and there will be one that says something like "compatibility files". Click on "compatibility files" and it will show you the list of all the newly saved files you have been looking for.
MAKE A BACKUP OF ALL THOSE FILES! In fact, it would be a good idea to make a backup of all of your coffeecup web page files, but since the compatibility files will have the same names as your older files, keep them in a different folder so you can update them later, just in case things get messy.

Once the backup copies are safe (like on a CD or in a file that is NOT in a coffeecup folder (different place on hard), Time to uninstall CC editor, re-start your computer, then install the editor from a fresh download from CoffeeCup.
Now see if your old files are still where they were. If all is fine with that, copy the "compatibility files" to your folder that has the files you want to update. You will have to overwrite the files, as they may have the same names. If any files get changed that are incorrect, well, that's where the backups come in handy.

Once you have everything looking the way you need it, you can delete the "compatibility files" and that option should go away on your tool bar. You have made a backup of these files anyway.

To test and see if all is well, create a blank page in html editor. Give it a name and save it. Now use Windows Explorer to find the file. If it shows up and there is no "compatibility files" tab, that means that the program is now recognized by Vista and you should be fine from now on.

Final note: Vista is picky about programs and taking the proper steps to install them. Always make a backup of your files, uninstall, re-start the computer, then install your updates. This will prevent this issue from re-occuring in future upgrades.

Hi there! Finally got the chance to do this tonight, and... I did everything step by step... Then when I created a new test page in the Editor and saved it... looked for it via Windows Explorer... and it showed up only in the "Compatiblility Files" tab...

So... not sure what to do next... Do you think I'll have to copy files from "Compatibiltiy Files" into the main folder from now on... or???

Thanks SO MUCH for spending the time to try to help me!

The second half of Cliff's long post explains his process to get rid of the compatibility files issue. He and I were comparing our Vista/HTML Editor scenarios and I never experienced the compatibility files, probably from doing a clean install of HTML Editor, like he mentioned. I'd go over the 2nd half of his steps unless the compatibility files is working fine as is.

I did have an issue where I needed to copy some of the compatibility files to the proper folder. Then I was able to use those files and save them without the compatibility issue. I still check after a few saves, for fear of the problem showing up again.
Is there any chance you moved the files over to your vista machine from another computer? That could cause Vista to think that the files are "legacy" files (created with an older software). Saving those files from your compatibility folder to a regular folder should solve the problem, as long as you have restarted your computer between the uninstall and install steps. I now make it a habbit to backup files, uninstall, restart, install, restart then use a program when upgrading. Takes longer, but it is more correct for the way Windows works with your files.

Hi Adam and Cliff,

Yeppers, did every step exactly as Cliff described. THEN, much later last night, did it all again... deleted all my CoffeeCup files (after having saved again in seperate folder named something else), uninstalled Editor, rebooted, installed again. This time when opening Editor, it only opens as a small window half buried under the Taskbar and all the click options are grayed out, have to open Task Manager to close it. But when I right click on Editor from Program Files list and "Open as Administrator", it opens fine. :)

Also, when first opening the new second install, and then replanted files into it via Windows Explorer, and saving a new test file, NOW it is saving it exactly there AND I can now access it via W Explorer. YAY!!

But now the mystery of having to open it as "Administrator"? Can't just click on it to open it like any other program? Not a problem at all, I can do that LOL... just curious. I thought I already AM the "Administrator"...? O well... aside from that very minor thing, everything seems to be working great again. Very much appreciated, thanks so much!!
I LOVE Coffee Cup!!!!

Most Sincerely,
Secret Hiker
