I am probably among many who have no desire to use the "Visual Editor". Is there a way to "turn it off" so that it does not show in the tabs?

under tools>preferences and where is it says "Initial Document Mode" select code editor and place a check mark in "Hide Visual Editor Tab"

Helen, which version of the html Editor do you have? If you have the newest, 12.5 build 400, that was released just a couple of days ago, there is no visdual tab any more.
