I've decided to start using CC HTML Editor at work for our intranet site. All the pages have been done using FrontPage. I have the latest build for CC HTML Editor, but when I open up the index page all I see is; "ÿþ<" (without quotes) and in preview it shows; "ÿþ<". Never seen anything like this before. I figure it may be something in the code that FrontPage creates? I'd really like to just start editing and not add the extra work of redoing everything since there's quit a lot of pages. Everything is saved on a server within our network, which I do not have control over.
Hiya Jon,
The main question to answer would be whether you are using the Code side or the Visual side of the HTML Editor? If you're using the visual side you may end up with some real issues as Front Page doesn't make very clean code (never did for that matter lol). I've seen some others posting about that symbol combination on the forums over the past few weeks, but I don't remember what program they were using, I think it was this one though. I tried searching for that string of characters and even just a few of them, but nothing came up so not sure.
I would suggest you put in a ticket to CC and see if they can help you track down what's wrong, but I am pretty sure if it's in the code that Front Page created, they probably won't be able to do a whole lot for you as it would entail them having to check your whole site code to find the conflict, which in the end isn't really their job hehe. They may have some ideas of where it's coming from though and be able to get you on your way to tracking it all down? Give them a try and see what they have to say.
Also do you have a link to the site that we can take a look at? There's some pretty good coders here on the user forums that will most likely be able to take a look at the code and might be able to tell you what the issue is too. A link is always helpful for others to see what is behind the code and could be conflicting or missing

Sorry, can't post a link to an intranet site. Unless your logged into our network you can't connect. It's for employees only.
No, I am not using the visual editor part either. I prefer html, besides the CC HTML editor is so easy to use! I'm sure it's something in the code output from FrontPage, I was hoping it would be an easy fix. Maybe something others have seen. I also did a search prior to posting and couldn't find anything. I'll submit a ticket to CC and maybe they can see something I'm missing.
Thanks for your help!

Jon, would it be possible to upload one or two pages of this intranet site to a server outside the intranet's firewall? You could remove sensitive bits and bobs, it would not be interesting to us anyway.
My guess is that these strange characters have something to do with the doctype and the charset in the FP-created code. Front Page is fairly old now, and the demands from various servers have changed, and you may have to change some of the meta stuff on those pages.
And do you happen to know what kind of server software the intranet is using? If it is as old as FP, maybe you should ask the sys admin to upgrade it.

html editor 2010 tends to work OK converting Frontpage coding. I have converted a large number of frontpage htm pages without a hitch.
Here is an example of a frontpage generated htm page.

Dave, when you say 'converted' what exactly did you do? Opened a new html5 page and pasted the contents minus the meta tags?
I see a lot of diamonds with a question mark in them where the ' ought to be.

Nothing like a real answer here, but certainly a reference to a similar problem by the looks of things...

Hi Inger
Perhaps converting is the wrong word. I just copied and pasted all the Frontpage source code into a blank CC html editor page.
The version of Frontpage was 2003 and I do remember now there were problems with certain special characters eg -(hyphen) '(single quote) and pound sign. It was a question of finding the characters in error deleting them and retyping.

Dave...your odd apostrophe here and there would indeed be just what you say...a quick search and replace with the special character would deal with that one in the editor.
By the sound of it, I stick to my assumption about a mismatch between doctype and charset in Jon's case. If the intranet server software can handle html5, I would go for that.
