I have lookeed on my web site for the vnu file that is loaded when I created the site but alas I cannot find it anywhere.

It should be in the htmldocs folder of the server. Usually a restore (as Scott mentioned) is what I have to do to see the new files uploaded if I'm signed into the server while uploading. For this I usually just click back to the home page of the server then back to my URL files.
