when I right click on my versions of vsd shortcut icon it doesn't give an option to choose windows 8 in the drop down menu box. It ends at windows 7.
I am having issues with "adding" files there is small icons that appear then disappear.

That's because you are already on Windows 8 so it doesn't need a compatibility setting for that one.
Set the compatibility checkbox on the bottom of the Compatibility tab to Run as Administrator and that should fix you up for that part.
