VSD (seemingly) randomly turns some of my text into jpegs. It always is fine in preview mode, but when the site is built and uploaded to the server ...kaboom. This is especially disconcerting when the text happens to be a link....which is now a DEAD LINK since it's now a jpeg.

HELP!

VSD does this whenever you add effects to text.

It has to in order to apply the effect to the text.

Sometimes this is helpful because it can lock in text elements so that you can use weird fonts and such without extra utilities or coding.

In your case, it is not helping at all.

Take off the effects you may have applied to your text elements, and it should rectify things.
