VSD-Trouble trying to change visited...

Hi,

I am trying to make my visited and unvisited link colors black so that my home page looks more uniform. I think I am going to the right place-Standard Settings for new pages-and I am changing the colors. However, it just will not change from what I had originally, even when I change the colors and apply to all pages. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks so much!

Gina try this:
http://kellyinfo.com/web/cnglinks.png
if that doesn't work you could always place this code in the head section of all pages under the edit> edit header:
<style type="text/css">
a:link { color:#000000;}
a:visited { color:#000000;}
a:hover { color:#ffff00;}
</style>

Thanks so much for your help. Your "plan a" didn't work, unfortunately. That's what I had been doing to no avail. But the code you gave me worked perfectly. Many thanks!

Gina and Bruzer,

I know this was an old thread, but the issue isn't old, so I decided to resurrect the thread in order to document the right answer for myself and for those who are asking the same question that Gina asked because it isn't documented in the VSD Help or anywhere else that I know of.

I was having the same problem as you, Gina, until I figured out the proper sequence for using the Standard Settings for New Pages dialog box (which took me about an hour of experimenting). This feature actually does work, and it's a lot faster than editing the header of every page---especially when there are hundreds or even dozens of pages. The proper sequence is as follows:

1) Open the Standard Settings for New Pages dialog box from the Settings menu (it will say Adjust Page Properties on the top bar).

2) Click on the Unvisited pages color block so you can choose which colors you want for your links by either: a) selecting them from the preselected Basic colors shown, or b) using the Define custom colors button to create your own colors. If you decide to use two of the preselected Basic colors, simply remember where they are located (row and column) and proceed to the next step. If you want to create your own colors, first select one of the white boxes in the Custom colors area, and then click on the Define custom colors button. This will expand the color selection box so you can define your own colors by HSB, RGB, or clicking on the color graphic display. After you have defined your first color, click on the Add to custom colors button so it is transferred into the white box you had selected previously. Then select another white box and repeat the same procedure that you went through for your first color. Once you have transferred both of your colors into the Custom colors white boxes, click on the Cancel button. (Don't worry, your colors will stay where you put them.) For future reference, I suggest you write down the RGB values of both of your custom colors.

3) Select the Home Page of your web site from the dropdown list on the lower left.

4) Once the Home Page is selected, you should see the Page size, Page background, and Page link colors change to match what they are on your Home Page (unless they are the same as the defaults already displayed).

5) Click on the Unvisited links color block again.

6) If you have decided to use two of the preselected Basic colors, click on the one you want for your unvisited links, and then click OK. If you have decided to define your own unvisited link color, do not select it at this time! Instead, pick any color from the preselected Basic colors and then click OK.

7) Click on the Visited links color block.

8) If you have decided to use two of the preselected Basic colors, click on the one you want for your visited links, and then click OK. If you have decided to define your own visited link color, do not select it at this time! Instead, pick any color from the preselected Basic colors and then click OK.

9) Now that you have changed the Page link colors, you need to first apply the new colors to your Home page by clicking the OK button on the lower left. Do NOT click the Apply to All Pages button at this time!

10) After you have applied new Page link colors to your home page, open the Standard Settings for New Pages dialog box from the Settings menu again and select your Home page from the drop down list on the lower left again. If the Page link colors are colors that you want to apply to all of your pages, you can click the Apply to All Pages button now. If the Page link colors are different from those colors you want to apply to all of your pages because you want to define your own colors instead of using the preselected Basic colors, then click on the Unvisited links box and select the color you had previously defined for your unvisited links from the Custom colors section and then click OK. Then click on the Visited links color box and select the color you had previously defined for your visited links from the Custom colors section and then click OK. Finally, click on the OK button on the lower left to apply your custom defined colors to your Home page first. Do NOT click on the Apply to All Pages button at this time!

11) Those who have selected preselected Basic colors for your visited and unvisited links will now see your new unvisited links color displayed on your Home page text links and on any other pages that you open from now on. (other pages that are currently open will have to be closed and reopened in order for the unvisited links color to change.) To see both colors, you will have to preview your web site using the Preview command from the Tools menu or by saving your web site and opening your Home page (Index.html) in your preferred browser.

12) Those who have selected Custom colors for your visited and unvisited links will also see your new unvisited links color displayed on your Home page text links but not on any other pages. In order to have the same Page link colors applied to all of your pages, you will need to open the Standard Settings for New Pages dialog box from the Settings menu one more time and select your Home page from the drop down list on the lower left. You should see your custom defined colors appear in the Unvisited and Visited links color boxes, which means you can now select the Apply to All Pages button on the lower left to finish what you set out to do. To verify that your custom defined colors have been applied to all of your pages, open one or two pages that are not open and check the page link colors. If they aren't, then follow these instructions again meticulously for successful results.

I know this process might seem to be somewhat long, but it's actually quite fast once you get used to it. The extra steps really shouldn't be necessary, though, which would make it even faster. At least it does work after all!

I just got a response from tech support:

it is a bug in the program and it is fixed in the new version 6.0 that will be released very very soon ;) However, there is a work around to that problem, and shorter I think! Please go to "Standard settings for new pages" again and change the color of both links (visited and unvisited links) to two different colors (for example yellow and orange) and then click ok. After that, go back to the same window and choose for the links the definitive colors (white and gray) and click "Apply to all pages" and select yes.

I'll cross-post this to both threads for completeness.

Spinny,

I just did some additional testing and discovered that once the default Page link colors have been changed on the Home page using two Basic colors, they can be changed on all pages using any colors (Basic or Custom). The key appears to be completing the change on the Home page first by clicking on the OK button after two Basic colors have been selected for the visited and unvisited links color boxes. After this has been done, custom colors can be selected and applied to all pages without first applying them to the Home page by itself. So, the last three steps of the procedure I described above can be reduced to one step. I will modify them and post the entire procedure in the Tricks and Tips section per BillR's recommendation. I'll also post this message in both threads.

I want DIFFERENT link colors on different pages. Any way to do that?

Chad,

Yes, just modify and add this code to every page.
<style type="text/css">
a:link { color:#000000;}
a:visited { color:#000000;}
a:hover { color:#ffff00;}
</style>

That code did not work for me, but this code did:

<style type="text/css">
<!--
#container a:link {color: #FFCC00; text-decoration: underline; }
#container a:visited {color: #FFCC00; text-decoration: underline; }
#container a:active {color: #FFCC00; text-decoration: underline; }
-->
</style>
