Hi, I had designed my site, and was trying to upload it to my ISP's server. Problems left and right, but that's another matter at this point.

At one point, I closed VSD and got a crash. I think my website design was saved okay. I hope.

Now anytime I try to launch VSD, it crashes. Even after I reboot.

I have Vista 64 with 8 gb ram and lots of free hard drive space.

Do I need to reinstall VSD at this point?

Here's the accompanying info:

Of course, windows vista wants to check online for a solution, but never finds any solution. I need to get this website published somewhat soon. Thanks in advance.

The problem here I think is VSD is not compatible with 64-bit systems.

Also, try this and see if it helps any:

1. Right-click the shortcut icon, and click Properties.
2. Click the Compatibility tab.
3. Here, put a check mark by Run This Program as an Administrator.
4. Next, put a check mark next to Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For: and ensure Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 is selected.
5. Click OK.

Hmmm, how can that be? I mean...it's my understanding that only 32 bit drivers are incompatible with a 64 bit OS. No hardware drivers involved here, right?

Unfortunately, I no longer have a 32 bit OS to use. Vista 64 bit has been out for two years now. I finally upgraded back in March, and I've been using it with lots of 32-bit application software since then.

I just purchased the "all products" bundle, figuring that it would run fine with Microsoft's currently supported OS.

And for the most part, it did run fine. As I mentioned earlier, I was able to VSD just fine, save my site, and even preview it. Many times, with no problem! Working in VSD was nice and efficient, and it only crashed (the first time) when I tried to shut it down. And as mentioned above, it now refuses to start, even via another user account.

So if what you say is correct and it's "not compatible," then it's probably at least 90% there...

EDIT:

I just saw your latest post. I'll try that right away, thanks!

It works. Running it in Administrator mode and in WinXP SP2 compatibility mode got me back into business.

I have since switched off the admin mode, however, and will continue to experiment with this to see "what" causes and "what" fixes. If I find anything significant, I'll shoot it up to you.

BTW, I'm "that one guy" in the whole USA who actually uses the User Access Control (UAC) feature in Vista!

Looking forward to trying out the other products in the bundle...

EDIT: I forgot to say "thank you." Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

I was gonna say I think you need more RAM. :P j/k I finally have Vista x64 on one of my computers, so I'll be testing that out more myself.

I'm actually shopping for more screens (3 is not enough), more cores (4 is not enough) AND more RAM! I am a glutton. I want my own damned data center!

J/K! Really, that made me laugh. Thanks, I needed that! :)

UPDATE:

Okay, it does appear that I need to have both things activated.

Run as Administrator
and
Run in XP/SP2 compatibility mode

If either one is off, then VSD doesn't like to run.

Interestingly enough, it does seem that WFB (Web Form Builder) runs just fine in standard (non-admin) and "normal" Vista modes.

No rush on this; I'm just happy I can use the software.

But really, VSD should be corrected at some point in the future, to bring it into compliance with Windows Vista standards, both from a UAC/security standpoint, as well as from wordsize 32-bit mode. Personally, I don't care if it runs in native 64-bit mode or in 32-bit compatibility mode; just as long as it (someday) will run on my system without special settings.

With those settings on, however, it seems to run fine, and I'm happy to have an inexpensive, easy-to-use visually-oriented web development environment!

Thanks for listening!

VSD doesn't run on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. A new install of VSD fails with a Windows "killed child" (killed child process) error thrown to an error box on-screen. Have done all the usual Windows troubleshooting steps for a failed run. Tried XP SP2 and SP3 compatibility with no success, tried run as admin with no success. The Windows automated troubleshooting process says that VSD is an "incompatible application."

Running a ZT Affinity 7334ma, AMD Phenom II 945 quad core 3 Ghz, 8 Gb memory. Comodo Internet Security (antivirus, antimalware, firewall) 100% disabled. No other software running that would intercept or block the application. Not using Windows User Access Control.

Other CoffeeCup apps (like HTML Editor) run fine.

Thanks for pondering. -Michael
