I knew that, and I use FF as well (which for me is working fine with her site). The link I posted is non browser specific. ;)

Hi Spinny and Bruzer, Thanks for your help. Well, I'm using IE7, and I have done everything on the list except try to repair the registry which I shall try now. Kind of scary. Am wondering if, instead, I restore the computer to a date before this problem started if that would work or if I would lose all the changes I have made in VSD since then? Need to think about this before I do anything. I don't want to do something where I will cause the computer to crash and lose everything, although I back up the computer regularly. Thank you for helping me.

Thanks Alexio for checking. Wish I knew why it isn't working on my computer, but everything is a learning experience. The PDFs open in VSD preview, but not in Explorer. so, must be a problem with that. Thanks again.

Just a thought here Sarah,

Is it possible that you're attempting to open the link on your LOCAL machine?

If so, and the link is mapped to where it would reside on your web server, it wouldn't necessarily open for you locally, but while on the site it would work just fine.

Like I said, just a thought.

Thanks Thomas for your thoughts. This is becoming very frustrating. the file will open in the VSD preview, but not on the internet.

Thank you Spinny for your link to fix the registry. I tried first to restore the computer back to before this horrible thing happened, but it didn't work. So, I deleted two files from the registry as your link said to do, but it changed nothing. So, I think I may have to reformat the hard drive. First I think I'll try a few more options and then if they don't work.... Well, computers will do strange things sometimes.

Thank you all for your help. Sarah

Sarah I had this problem once before where nothing showed up for downloading or viewing in IE, but it was a IE setting that was holding it back.
but to double check is there any anti-virus or firewall stopping this do you think?

Hm, thanks for writing. You know what I think happened. A couple of months ago I used Windows Live One Care to scan the computer and it did something, I don't know what, to the registry files. so, then is about when this problem of not opening pdf files began. I probably should have restored the computer back before that then at that time, but I didn't. So, now the computer is messed up. Maybe the only way to fix it at this point is to reformat the computer and begin again. Just hope I don't lose stuff. I hate to think of finding and reinstalling all my programs. Yuk.
I do have firewall and avg, but pdf files used to open just fine even with the windows firewall and avg. thanks for your help. You always seem to be here to help with my problems. I appreciate everyones help. I have learned so much from the forum.

Sarah, I'm not really sure but the best course right now would be to do that restore if it allows you to go back that far. I had to redo my hard drive as well and formatting does erase everything there. Unless you know of a better way.
Of course now I use True Image to back up plus 10 cd-r's
