VSD and Monitor Resolution

I just had a lengthy email exchange with a guy who encountered major overlapping problems when he visited my website. During this exchange, he told me that he figured out that he needed to change the font size of my text on his monitor from 22 points to 11 points in order to get rid of the overlapping, which made the text so small he couldn't hardly read it. He also claimed that VSD used my monitor's native resolution as its reference when converting my pages to HTML. Consequently, the only people who can see my website without the overlapping (according to him) are people who have the same native resolution. Is this true? Is VSD a monitor resolution dependent app?

Tom,

I am not sure if you are aware, but you are still using a 2+ year old version of Visual Site Designer. All purchases come with life-time upgrades for free, so why stay so outdated! :)

We have actually been working on an update to Visual Site Designer that address many past issues. You can download the latest version(7.0 Build 24) from the My Products page on our website. Upon installing the new version to your computer, it is best to instantly open your website using the new version and click File > Save As to save the project to a new location. This will apply all version changes to your website! :D

Although this update to Visual Site Designer has made vast improvements to the markup and how the site will display in different browsers and operating systems, there are a few things you should take a look at.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, I know that I'm using an older version of VSD, and I am planning to upgrade to VSD 7 as soon as I can coordinate the upgrade with my other projects. I was just wondering if VSD 7 has these same issues. I have read some of your responses to other topics in which you discussed VSD 7's display of websites being much more consistent across all the major browsers. So, I didn't know how much of an improvement I can expect to see with the upgrade over VSD 6.

I should also mention that I tested my website in the latest version of all the major browsers before I launched it earlier this year, and I didn't see any problems at the time. I was amazed at the consistent display I saw. However, I was viewing all those browsers on my monitor, so that may have been a factor. The guy I was emailing claimed this was the case. BTW, he is using Firefox 2 and IE 6, which I suspect is also a factor with the overlapping he is seeing. Does VSD 7 display websites well for these older browser versions, too?

We do not provide any support for IE6. That browser is dead gone and buried. Heck even Firefox 2 is too far gone. ;) All we guarantee with VSD is IE7+, Safari, Chrome and Firefox 4+

Version 7 has a lot of markup changes that will really help with how your site renderes in all the browsers and operating systems.

:lol:IE6 AND FF2??? Your site isn't the only one that will look messed up to him!
If he wants to use a 'dead' browser, he should be looking there to find the source of his page/text problems
By the way – The upgrade in VSD helped with some font issues in the newer browsers, the ones that most people are using, so get going on that upgrade! :D

Yeah, I figured his browsers had a lot to do with it, and I told him he should at least upgrade Firefox to version 3. He claimed version 2 is the most stable and didn't seem to be interested. So much for that. Anyway, thanks everyone for your input. VSD 7 here I come!
