Bruzer,

You asked how I created these buttons. I used the shape tool to create a rectangle object and then added the text, added a link, and also added the mouseover stuff (different fill color, unchecked "use same text on both" box, offset mouseover by 9 pixels, and increased vertical size to 38 pixels). Nothing fancy or complicated.

Tom another question is this from a template? If so which.

No, it's not from a template. I created all the buttons from scratch.

Bruzer, I should mention one more thing. Behind all the buttons is one long rectangle that has the shadow and bevel effect. The only button that has a shadow effect is the one that is acting weird.

Ok with that said is the big button restricted to the size of the shadow rectangle? other words if you made it wider than the button would it work?
Also you mentioned that the bottom buttons work fine, if they are the same links try removing the top and copy/paste the bottom to the top, will it work then?

Bruzer,

I don't understand your first two questions, but I did copy the bottom button to the top and modified it so that it would have an offset of 9 pixels instead of -9 pixels (the bottom button extends upward instead of downward) and then did another preview. The first time it worked fine. (I also changed the wording of the mouseover button so that it reads "Web Support Group" on the first line and (Social Network &) on the second line, which is the reverse of the bottom button.) But when I moved the "&" to the beginning of the second line of text (before the "Social Network), the button exhibited the same behavior as the original button did! So, then I moved the "&" to the end of the second line of text again, and the button worked fine! Does this mean that the "&" is causing the problem?

That could be the cause Tom, Sorry I re-read and you did say that you copied/pasted-my bad!
What I tried was downloading the free dhtml menu builder and made a menu.
I had a hell of a time trying to get what you did with the larger text so I thought I would try the menu builder... you may want to consider it to Tom.
If the menu works without the "&" then that would be the cause wouldn't you say.:)

Bruzer,

Sorry for the delayed reply, but I had to step away from my PC for a few minutes. I thought the "&" might be causing the problem until I opened another copy of my website (the one in which I had first discovered this problem) to see which buttons did and didn't work there. It turns out that the top button on my home page has all the same settings but doesn't exhibit this problem. The bottom button didn't have these same settings, so I changed it. But when I did another preview, the bottom button had the problem! So, then I copied the top button to the home page of the working copy of my website and did another preview, and the button worked like it should! So, I think the problem has something to do with the sequence in which the changes are made to the button rather than the location of the "&" in the second line of text.

I originally created this button to be just like all the rest: 20 pixels high and wide enough for the text for both the normal view and the mouseover view. But then I decided to add the "Social Network" line of text to just the mouseover view because of some additional information I put on that page. I first did this to both buttons on the Web Support Group page and increased the height of both buttons accordingly, and no problems showed up in the preview. But when I copied the buttons to my home page and changed the mouseover color and removed the Bold style from the text to match all the other buttons, this problem started to occur. At first I thought copying the buttons from one page to another page was the cause, so I deleted the copies and started changing my original buttons on each page. But the problem kept occurring at random, and I had no idea why. I'm still not sure what the problem is because I haven't tested enough different change sequences to confirm that as the cause (and I don't really have the time to do all that testing either). Plus, because the problem went away when I copied the whole row of buttons (with the bad button in it) to my basic two-page test website makes me even more unsure.

Your suggestion to use the free dhtml menu builder is not really suitable because of the work involved, but thanks anyway. I guess I'll just have to do some more experimenting to see what else I discover. If you think of any more ideas, let me know.

Bruzer,

I just copied the top and bottom buttons (that were working as intended) from my home page #1 to my home page #2. When I did a preview, both buttons on my home page #2 displayed the problem but the buttons on my home page #1 still work the way they should. This tells me something else is to blame. So, I copied all the buttons that work and all the ones that don't work to my basic web page. How can I upload the page for you to see?
