Catherine, Do you have an anti-virus software running? If you do try shutting that down to see if it's interfering with the transfer.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Catherine,
do you have the lasted VSD?
Build 19 is the latest.
Delete you current version of VSD before installing the new one, then try you upload again.
Let us know what happens.

I had the same problem with GoDaddy and after a couple of days trying to work it out here on the forums I contacted GoDaddy, After about 1 1/2 hours on the phone they migrated my site to a new Server. They told me they could not find anything wrong but the customer service rep did let it slip that they changed their security protocols. I have not had any trouble since they moved the site to the new server. I think the new server is called 4GH. There was no extra cost involved.
Sometimes all we need is a different perspective.
