I am trying to open Visual Site Designer for the first time from my desktop. I double-click the icon and it seems to do a little processing but then nothing ever pops up. I tried to open it from the programs area too with the same results.

I have never had it open before and we're starting off on the wrong foot ;-)

Has anyone run into this before?

Try running VSD as an Administrator.
If you are on Win7, you right-click on the program icon, choose 'Properties', click on the 'Compatibility' tab and check the option 'Run this program as an administrator'.
I seem to remember having seen this - or similar - problem before, and running as admin solved it.
