Since I have set up my website, I have found it easier to go to the Control Panel on my host server to do the uploading of my files rather than go through the hassle of setting up the FTP settings in 4 or 5 different CC softwares.
My question is this; In VSD7, the file name extension is .VNU, which, if I am not mistaken, as a whole means nothing when it comes to the building of your site. In other words, it is not a .HTML or .XML or .PHP or anything else that a web browser is going to be able to read. In essence, a file exclusive of CC software that is probably made up of a combination of the above mentioned files. So that you have no choice but to use the FTP feature of VSD. Is this correct?
And also, is this new to VSD7 or was it this way in version 6?

Steven, why not use free FTP, or direct ftp
You can set it up once, and upload everything with the one program,
I use free FTP for all my uploads except VSD which i do independently, as it is the VSD website that i edit most

That is a good alternative, but as I said, it is so easy to just know what files you have to be uploaded and do it from the Control Panel on the server.

Viv,
Will free FTP upload the VSD file (.vnu)? Or is this an exclusive thing with CC? That can only be uploaded with VSD?
You can upload whatever you want.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!
I understand that Tom, but what happens to this .VNU file? It is only one file. Is it understood by the browser? Or what? I would think that it would have to be an .HTML file or such.
It is only understood by the CC VSD application. But it will be on your server.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!
Now I'm really confused
If it is only understood by VSD, why would I want it on my host server?

I don't know. I'm just answering your questions. I'm not a mind reader.

The .VNU file is used by Visual Site Designer and it contains all the settings for your website. If you loose this file, you will no longer be able to edit your website in the software. It is MISSION critical to always make backups of this file. If you use VSD to upload your website, we automatically make a backup of this file and upload it to your server. If you are doing things manually, then it is up to you to make those backups.
Uploading through a control panel is a nightmare. You should either use VSD or just upload with Direct FTP or even Free FTP. Much easier that way in the long run.
