It is my personal belief that if you a webmaster, you should hand code websites so this very thing is a non-issue.

Think of Visual Site Designer as a programing editor and the vnu file as the saved file in the editor. The html output is akin to the executable the compiler produces. Without the source code, you cant compile and produce another exe.
